I would like to add shares to my investment portfolio, currently I'm only in funds. I have been doing quite a bit of research and following a number of shares I like. I have read in a few places you need a min of £1000 really. Is this the case and do you all agree? Also is that into one company or a mix? TIA.0

I'd say dont spend more then 1% commission each way if possible

Hi
I'm thinking of getting into buying and selling shares. Can anyone recommend any good guides (either printed or online) for background information. I'm a complete newbie so would appreciate any help.

The Naked Trader by Robbie Burns. Cracking read, in laymans terms, by someone who has made many hundreds of thousands buying and selling shares. The risk is that you get so enthusiastic you sell everything you have to put in shares tho! Take a steady approach and monitor your initial investment and don't get carried away. Baby steps. If I had a pound for every pound I'd lost, I'd be confused0

i have:
228 barclays shares
159 international power shares
83 santander shares
lastly what is the best way of selling them to get a lump sum house deposit?
Today, as I type your shares are worth the following;
Barclays £3.06 each = £697.68
International Power £4.24 each = £674.16
Santander £7.28 each = £604.24
Barlcays in particular are very liquid and will move daily.
You can call the shareholding company (i.e. Computershare etc) and instruct them to sell them. You should ask them how much brokers fee they will charge.0 -
I have some shares in Smiths Group supposed to have just jumped 99p to 1390.6p whats the best way to go about selling these shares?0

Hi All - quick (easy) question I hope....Am looking at buying (on the French market) some EuroDisney shares to get the Park benefits....looking round for a "one off" transaction I see the Halifax charge about £12 for them to press a button. For the sake of pressing a button is that the cheapest / easiest way?
Thanks!What should I put in here that won't upset people.........0 -
Halifax will charge you more then that, 12 is for uk shares not french market. iii charge 15 for foreign shares. TD waterhouse maybe0

Thanks for the response....appreciate it....looking at a few of the "services" they all want to charge Management fees's - if all I want to do is go in - buy the shares - keep them - thats it.What should I put in here that won't upset people.........0

To receive perks as a shareholder normally the shares need to be held in certificated form rather than held in a nominee account. Same situation with the perks at Disney, you need 5 or 20 shares in a certificated form as mentioned in their link:
http://corporate.disneylandparis.com/CORP/EN/Neutral/Images/general-membership-conditions.pdf
So holding Disney SCA shares in an online account is not an option for you anyway based on what you want to do.
Not time or cost effective to set up an online account, buy the shares on the French market, convert online holdings to share certificates, receive them and then close the online trading account.
Likely option: a bank to buy the shares for you if they have affiliated stockbrokers. Depending on who you bank with, for how long etc etc they might be able to arrange this for you in a branch at a reasonable cost (but expect minimum £10-20 for time and trading costs and then add to this the cost of 5 or 20 shares) eg halifax, barclays etc. For info:
Require: shares in EuroDisney SCA, ticker EDL, ISIN: FR0010540740
Current share price at 16:00 ish today: around 4.4 Euro each
Year price range: 3.53 - 5.15 Eur
Worth reading through these threads on the same subject for info also:

Best decide if there is any real merit cost-wise in becoming a shareholder for the perks though.
