i hold some shares in a small mining company. I have noticed that this company almost every other day keeps buying more of its own shares. is this a good sign or bad thing?

Good means less shares in circulation means price more stable and potentially more divi in the long run per shareholder.
Bad means they are using cash that could have been used for divi for buying shares.

It also depends on what they do with them if the cancel them long term then as above if the issue them to those with long term share options means they don't have to issue new shares.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

    Today, as I type your shares are worth the following;

    Barclays £3.06 each = £697.68
    International Power £4.24 each = £674.16
    Santander £7.28 each = £604.24

Barlcays in particular are very liquid and will move daily.
You can call the shareholding company (i.e. Computershare etc) and instruct them to sell them. You should ask them how much brokers fee they will charge.

many thanks for your constrictive help.
These were the figures i thought but the point was in the wrong place!!
Does anyone know if now is a good time to sell? we don't need the money for the house but was looking to have the left over money a little more accessible

I can't seem to get the Comdirect site up in english,
  • Just to update........thanks to all for the comments earlier in the week. Also spoke to Halifax Sharedealing peeps. 30 mins after hanging up from them - I had the ShareAccount open - deposit in place - order put in - shares bought.

Later in the evening I printed the Contract Note off - filled the form in on the DisneylandParis website - received email from them with a PDF of my form which I printed off and signed - then rescanned along with the Contract Note into two PDF files sent by email to DLP. 9.30 in the morning - one saying "thanks for the email - please print your form, sign and fax back with proof of purchase" and another one saying "Welcome to the Shareholder club - this is your number - we're sending your proper card in the post & here's your logon to the Shareholder special area.

All in all a very painless process. As said thanks for the advice and pointers!
What should I put in here that won't upset people.........
  • Just looking for some advice. I am a Misys PLC shareholder and they have a B Share scheme proposed to return £145m to shareholders as income or capital. My holding is in an ISA wrapper. Should I worry over electing to recieve as income or capital if in an ISA. As I understand all is free of tax. Maybe there is an impact on the current annual investment limits though ? Hope someone has a better idea than me !
  • Should be fine either way I think

I have looked a bit further and unsderstand that the dividend is taxed at source at the basic rate. From EQUINITI - Tax savings – there is no capital gains tax on your gains and higher rate tax payers only pay the basic rate on dividends. From this "benefit" I read that the income option will be taxed before it gets to the ISA - right ??

It seems from the Misys blurb that :-
The Company will not be required to withhold tax at source when paying the Single B Share Dividend.

So maybe there is little difference of treatment within an ISA.
  • ISA dividends are the same amount as any others

  • Thanks sabretoothtigger for repsonding. So this is my understanding, in the normal run of things shares that pay dividends held in an ISA get the usual tax taken at source - but in this specific case it is stated the company will not be required to withhold tax. So if your Misys shares are outside an ISA wrapper my understanding is that the dividend would need to be declared as a gross receipt and a tax amount paid. Within the ISA wrapper I understand although no tax was withheld that is to the good as I never declare any ISA information on Tax Returns. Having the choice of taking this return of cash to shareholders of either income or capital does need consideration, particular circumstances dictate if the holdings are not in an ISA wrapper and tax on the dividend is due later might steer toward taking the capital option especially if within your annual CGT allowance. I welcome any other thoughts on this.
