grateful for advice please: I am a basic rate taxpayer with approx £6000 in shares, invested with First Direct over 13 months and outside an ISA wrapper. I pay no CGT on anything else (have never filled in a tax return). I envisage being liable for CGT once over the next 3 years when my husband and I sell our house (he is higher rate tax payer, also never paid CGT). I don't envisage making much CGT on it!

The first £3500 I invested between Nov 09 and Mar 10 has provided growth of over £500 plus dividends.

I am in a position to invest the whole £10,200 for this year's allowance. I invest for dividends rather than growth and have no intention of selling holdings unless I think they're going to stop paying decent dividends. I would reinvest the dividends in the same shares or in others. As I don't pay CGT, what is the benefit in holding any shares inside an ISA wrapper? If I immediately/automatically reinvest dividend income is it still taxable? thank you

The bed-and-breakfast loophole (selling and then re-buying shares the next day to crystalise a gain or loss) was closed many years ago, according to this 2005 article:

There are some ways round it (using your spouse; buying a "contract for difference") but for a large share holding, an ISA (ideally with a fixed management charge) is probably the cheapest, and certainly the simplest, solution.

CGT is normally not applied on the sale of the residential property where you live, unless there are other factors involved:

We don't live there any more, but rent elsewhere due to work. still, as our main residence for some years, there is a possibility we can apply for CGT relief.

So - what's the point in having shares inside an ISA for someone who won't be taking more than £10,000 profit per year? What am I missing here?

Why not move back in while you refurb for a few months before you sell

As you reinvest the dividends you receive, you could save yourself some complicated calculations.

Bear in mind also that you don't always have a choice in selling - if a company whose shares you own is taken over, you have no say in the timing of that sale. Off the top of my head, I have lost Pilkington, Viridian, Scottish and Newcastle, Tomkins, Chieftain and Brit Insurance ( all good divi payers in their time ) to takeovers, all at a decent premium to what I'd paid. Think of the ISA fee as insurance.

thanks cheerful cat, I see your point. But still, I won't be holding more than £5000 in each company, so I'd have to be pretty unlucky to be forced to sell so many in one tax year that my profit was in excess of £10k. I keep going round this one in my head!
