Hi - could anyone give me advice on the cheapest way to sell some of my shares please?
I too need help with this. I have inherited my mother's Diageo, paper shares. If I am interpreting the market correctly, they are high atm so I want to sell. I have never had shares before so haven't a clue what would be the best way for a one off sale (I am unlikely to buy again).
I guess I have to pay tax on this?0 -
I would like to learn about the stock market, as i plan to invest in shares in the near future. Can someone recommend a good forum like this one, but dedicated to stock trading; also any books for beginners that would be useful. Thanks0

III and LSE (London South East) have forums on dealing/shares
and although I have never read it many recommend the Naked Trader as a good book for learning about trading.
Just be careful with any tips you get (although do have a look at questor on the daily telegraph site.I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0 -
Hi there, I used to have an account with Hoodless Brennan which held a small number of shares and cost me nothing unless I bought or sold them. I was very happy with the account. A year ago they transferred me to TD Waterhouse and the letter in bold type stated I could keep trading for the same low fees. Nowhere did it state I would get charged for inactivity on the account although there is in the small print a sentence which suggests I should look online at the Q&A's. Anyway a year on and I get a letter to say I have been charged £40 + VAT for 4 inactive quarters on my account.
I am not best chuffed. I phoned them up and was initially told it couldn't be changed I had to pay and would have to pay £25 to get my share certificate but only after I paid the fees. I then asked for proof of my agreement to the fees. The lady put me on hold and then came back saying they would wave the fees but they now wanted £35 to send me the share certificate. I agreed and gave them my debit card details as my priority was to get the share certificate (they were threatening to cell the shares to get the £40 quid off me). I now wonder was I too hasty. Why was this offer suddenly made when I asked for proof that I agreed to their terms and conditions? Is £35 a normal fee to pay to get your share certificate?
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

I'm thinking about investing some money into ETF's or Investment trusts as a way of spreading risk without lots of fees. There's quite a lot of them to choose from so I was wondering if anyone had any tips for choosing them. I know it's best to buy the larger funds so it's easier to buy/sell but how do I find out what stocks each fund is holding and how is the 'discount' worked out on investment trusts? I read that you can buy for example, 100p worth of shares for 85p if the discount of the trust is 15%. But the price of the shares in the IT still buys and sells at whatever price the market decides so what's the advantage in the discount, or rather the disadvantage? Is the dividend payout higher than it otherwise would be if you held shares to the same value in all of the stocks that the IT holds? How do I see what the current discount is for each fund?
Sorry if this is confusing... I am too.0
