  • Hi,i have shares in bt but i had not recieved any dividends from them for almost 20 years since i moved abroad and more or less lost track of them.obviously bt had no address for me so i did not recieve any dividends.now i am back in the uk i contacted bt and was informed that i would get my dividends.i have recieved cheques from them in various amounts but i felt considering the length of time since i last recieved any dividends that there should be more cheques coming my way.i contacted a company called equiniti, who are apparently responsible for paying out the dividends who took my number and said someone will call to explain why i had recieved the amount that i got.well noone called but i recieved a couple more cheques, almost i believe ,because i had complained.i still feel i did not get the full amount due therefore i called them again to ask for more.this time i was told that i did have unclaimed dividends and they would be sent to me.i had another call the same day from equiniti telling me that they would only pay out the amount of dividends going back 12 years and not for the complete term that i was entitled to.i asked why and was informed that thats what companies do.now my question is.do i forget about any more money coming my way or should i be trying to get in touch with the financial ombudsman to look into the matter.i just feel that something is not right here and that somehow i am being done out of a good sum of money.i would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this matter.
    Regards and thanks.

I have no idea on the legitimacy of their arguement, but come on, 20 years! If you didn't leave them an address, what were they supposed to do? Things were very different 20 years ago and the administration costs involved in tracking down all those divis is going to be considerable. If you do eventually get them all, I think in fairness you should expect to pay the administrative costs involved. Depending on how many shares you hold, this may not be worth the expense.

regardless of what you do for the past, why dont you set up them to pay dividends direct into your bank account so you dont have to worry about cheques

What does anyone think about the drilling activity in the Falkland Islands?

This thread is about share dealing in general.

There is often a discussion on specific shares in individual threads on the 'Savings & Investments' board.

Hello I recently started share dealing. Nothing major just investing a couple of thousand pounds...not 10's of thousands of pounds(!).

If i was to make say make 0-£4000 in profit, do i need to pay income tax on that profit.

From what i read so far:

    1. We pay Capital Gains tax on any profits exceeding £10,100
    2. We pay income tax on Dividends (but for basic rate tax payers, that is already calculated and we don't need to do anything)

what about income tax - do we pay any income tax?

P.S: Im not using a ISA share share account. Im just using a normal one from natweststockbrokers

The way I work it is to take the number of shares I buy (say 1000) at 50p = £500 x stamp duty at .5% = £2.50, plus buying AND selling commission, £15.00 =£517.50 that is total cost trading in the shares. Then divide by the number of shares = 51.75p per share. Multiply by the % profit you want to make, say 5%, =51.75 x 5% = 54.34p. You can then watch the price and sell when (if!)it reaches that level, knowing you have taken all costs into account.

I'm using iWeb, and it works this out for me. Shows average cost per share, including charges, shows current share price, and change in price in £ and %age terms.

Not a definitive answer, see HMRC for that...
