Apologies. I had no idea you could move it out of a cash ISA and into a S&S ISA.
That's something for me to consider now!

    Thanks tradetime.

    :T

Just remember it must be done similar to a transfer from one Cash ISA provider to another, namely the money must never leave the ISA wrapper, check the procedure with your S&S ISA provider.
Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

I think thats usually true but some brokers might allow fractions.
Halifax sharebuilder does, some shares are 30 pounds or more each so its useful for small position buying or dividend reinvestment which they specialise in

Does anyone know who gives close spreads on AIM listed companies. Selftrade seems to have a 10% spread which I believe is excessive.
  • 10% is normal for many tiny companies, Im not sure the broker makes that much difference. Try checking the price on moneyam and it shows the spread % realtime

I would stick to larger listed companies to avoid this problem, they will be below 1%

Try iii for a cheaper broker

  • Hi there guys,
I am totally new to this and i want to learn how to buy shares, Ideally i would like to hold the index ftse100 in the long term and i want to buy some shares. I have a few strategies but i am not looking to buy frequently. I am studying at the LSE and want to become a trader, so thought it would be good to get some direct experience.

    Regards.

    1. Open a stockbroking account - make it a low cost one if you're only dealing with small amounts of money and one without an 'inactivity fee' - I use 1st direct and the execution seems pretty reasonable.

    2. Do some research on trackers - I tend to use iShares - and if you can, get an Acc fund or a SCRIP divididend to roll up the distributions (assuming you don't want the income for whatever reason).

As a rule of thumb, I aim to keep total costs (include the cost to sell as well as the ETF fee below 1%).

You'll probably want to use your ISA allowance too if you haven't already.

    3. Buy the security you want.

    4. Make money (hopefully).

On a slight tangent, if you're a student, and this is long-long term money, you may want to consider a FTSE All Share or FTSE All Small tracker, small caps generally do better over the long long term than large/mega caps.

.As a first-time investor, I'd like to ask for opinions about the value of cumulative investing - pound cost averaging - in my circumstances.

I'm 60 years old. Looking at possible retirement in 7 years. Living off savings at present but trying to get re-employed.

My savings are £60k. I'm currently considering investing £15k of this in the markets, with a (sensibly!) diversified portfolio, mainly using funds but also maybe some individual trades.

As I understand it, the advantage of building a portfolio from regular selected monthly investments is that some pitfalls of poor decision-making can be avoided as new market information can guide new investment decisions each month.

    — Over what time frame should I consider investing my £15k?

    — Should I invest more per month at first, or less, or always stick to the same monthly amount?

    — Is cumulative investing a good idea, or will I just lose out from not being fully invested from the start?

    Any thoughts welcome.

(P.S. Hope I'm in right place as there's no New Thread button on this sub-Forum.)

Statistically speaking, pound-cost averaging actually more often detracts from returns over time, rather than add to them. Obviously regular instalments from Oct 07 to March 09 would have been great. But regular instalments from March 03 to Oct 07 would have been awful. The market was going up pretty much the whole time.

If you have the money, and do not know how to time the market (few do with any consistent accuracy) a lump sum investment is better.

Cumulative investing is good if you don't already have the money. i.e. £250 per month from your salary. But if you have the money, and its long-term, you're better off with a single lump sum investment.

Thanks for the reply xyy123. I'd recently read this article at Morningstar which suggests that regular investing vs. lump sum adds to returns rather than detract from them. Though the underlying point being made may be that this is better than trying to switch in and out of the market in good or bad times.

    http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/news/article.aspx?lang=en-GB&articleid=77967&categoryid=416

Of course it depends on the period chosen, as you point out. Perhaps the price-changes in their graph are well chosen to prove their point. I was thinking of building up a portfolio over a period of 18 months - 2 years, which in reasonable conditions (!) might cover most eventualities of the markets.

Nevertheless, the temptation must be to get fully invested as soon as possible, see what happens and change investments if necessary.
