Do you run Linux - if not why?

For someone who claims to have worked in IT for a long time you have very little knowledge, what "package management" means. It is more than just your OS updates. It is much easier to keep all your software up-to-date in Linux. All your updates for the OS and all programs are in one place. In Windows you need to download updates for most programs one by one and install them manually.
I'm not the OP, but thats fast becoming a myth, Windows 10 now handles its native packages via Windows update along with Office and has started to open the door to Flash etc. If you want something that brings it all into line, then something like "Chocolaty" will do exactly what you need.
As for commercial rollout, you would always use a central management system anyway, such as Altiris, SCCM or god forbid, centrastage.0 -
I think the fact that (at the time of writing) only 67 people have voted in the poll shows the vast majority of people on this site have absolutely no interest in what operating system they use.
As long as the device they are using boots up and gives them access to the Internet they don't really care one way or another.0 -
Like a lot of people around here I tried various Linux flavours years ago ... most of them probably! (Loved that Enlightenment desktop by the way!! ...) ... but got bored with it all eventually.0

Instead of "Why do you not use Linux?" what i'd like to know is why you do use Linux? What does it give you that Windows, iOS or Android doesnt?Speed, reliability, better package management, easier maintenance/troubleshooting, better (non-peripheral) hardware support, far more flexibility and control, better security, text shells with sane features, wide range of software that's easily searchable via repositories... and a desktop environment that isn't an ugly bloated monstrosity. If you get your kicks by using it then fine, but please dont tell me i'm "wrong" or am "too stupid to know otherwise" just because i dont want to be bothered with a "solution" for problems i dont have and that will leave me less than 100% compatible for the purposes i need it for.
Jesus Christ! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
YOU asked why people use Linux. I gave you my reasons. Don't throw your toys out the pram just because your favourite OS is different to mine! :rotfl:0 -

I dont "profess" to have worked in IT for a long time. I have.
PCs are a tool to do my job, not my job. A PC is merely a way of connecting to the system i need to and behind the scenes some help desk graduate makes sure our PCs and laptops work.
My point still stands. Any updates of the O/S happens for me, the only packages i need are Office which will tell me when it wants to update as anything else i use is via SaaS.
I dont give a monkeys about packages and how it makes your life easier, frankly, because i dont have to.0 -

Loving the way you edited that together to try to make your point. Sad really.
What i took exception to was your statement (which you ommited nicely from your post there "The funny thing is that you do have those problems with Windows 10. You just don't know (or care). Oh well." - like in some way you using Linux makes you more intelligent or superior.
I dont have those problems. Sorry you cant accept that.
I dont have a "favourite O/S" by the way. I'm not some weird geek. I use whatever tool gets the job done in the most pain free way for me. That currently happens to be Windows on my PC's and laptops and Android on my phone.0 -

+1
I think that wholly summarises it.0 -
A local company used to ship base units. They were advertised for you to load Windows yourself but they shipped them with linux pre-loaded. The reviews were fabulous. People turned them on. Faster than Windows. Clicked on Firefox. Worked great. LibreOffice fine. Really rave reviews. Then one day clicked on owner's Facebook page. "Today I have been wined and dined courtesy of Microsoft". Went back on base unit page "All units now shipped with Windows". All reviews had disappeared. Microsoft will always move to block serious linux usage. I have a feeling that's why you can get a licence key for £3 from ebay. Microsoft want all the xp users and linux users to swap to Windows 10 for £3. Unless they can't block it?0

I have a car. I want to drive it. I dont need to know how to build it and i dont care how it does what it does. It performs a function for me.
Linux is having the car for free and never to pay for any fueland still taking you from A to B without any fuss.

i'd like to know is why you do use Linux
1. Free
2. Runs better (faster) with old hardware. I brought my old computers to life with Linux Mint. Windows was limpting on it.
3. Better security - I run no anti-virus. While there are free antivirus in Windows it does slow the systems down (linked to #2).
4. Web browsing is no different from Windows/Mac because all browsers are available inside it.
5. No need for continuous "uprades" as in Windows!
6. Libre Office suite is good replacement for Microsoft Office for 90% of people. It also supports MS Office file format.
7. It is still possible to run Windows via Virtual Box. What people say this as a faff in Linux often sold as feature of MacOS. How odd is that?
I am not saying everyone should run Linux but I am saying give it a try and you may like it more than Windows/Mac. Other than some time, you have nothing to lose in worst case.
If you are thinking of starting with Linux, then I recommend you start with Linux Mint as it has nearest to Windows like interface.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0
