Some friendly despot should pass a law limiting Linux to 2 implementations - one user-friendly one for mass use and an obscure, totally configurable one to provide a challenge for dedicated hobbyists.
All of my company's webservers run on linux, as do all of its database servers and mail servers, for example. I have tried Linux but it's a complete non-starter for me.
Nothing I need to use will run on it.0 -
Instead of "Why do you not use Linux?" what i'd like to know is why you do use Linux? What does it give you that Windows, iOS or Android doesnt?
I find Windows an entirely serviceable desktop OS, but the desktop is not the sum of computing.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
My mind at 73 has been completely taken over with Windows 7. I know I will have to change to 10 at some point, but I don't want to. 7 gives me all I want from a computer.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I love Linux.
I have 4 desktop computers and have at least one distribution of Linux on each one, alongside Windows 10. (4 different Linuxes + Windows on one PC).
I just use them for interest sake really, although I could easily use Linux for everything if I really had to.0 -

Speed, reliability, better package management, easier maintenance/troubleshooting, better (non-peripheral) hardware support, far more flexibility and control, better security, text shells with sane features, wide range of software that's easily searchable via repositories... and a desktop environment that isn't an ugly bloated monstrosity.0 -

I dont have issues with any of those running Win10.
If you do or did you must have been running desperately old hardware with a mechanical drive.0 -

Nope. The funny thing is that you do have those problems with Windows 10. You just don't know (or care). Oh well.
I've been working in IT since i was 22 and i'm 49 now. Well aware of what works for me and what doesnt, thanks.
I've three laptops and a desktop. Desktop is 5+ years old and an old i3 processor. Two of the laptops are 5+ years old, one is an old i3 and the other an old i5.
All machines are running 8GB RAM, though 4GB is ample. All four are running SSDs.- Speed - all can process, render screens and load programs faster than i can work.
- Reliability - no issues with reliability of the O/S. It works
- Better package management - Win10 does periodic updates and i leave it to it. No need to manage "packages"
- Easier maintenance - I dont need to perform ANY maintenance on the O/S thanks.
- Troubleshooting - never really needed to, but at worst i can google the error and someone will have a solution.
- Better (non-peripheral) hardware support - I dont need anything other than what will plug in to the USB ports.
- Far more flexibility and control - It works. I dont need it to be "flexible" it just works.
- Better security - I run Win Defender and have no issues with viruses or malware. If you frequent sites or parts of the internet that requires enhanced security / protection, then fine.
- text shells with sane features - dont need them, dont use them.
- Wide range of software that's easily searchable via repositories - I dont need to search "repositories" for software that might suit. I can buy / get it free off the shelf thanks. I can get any amount of mainstream games too if i so desire
- A desktop environment that isn't an ugly bloated monstrosity - i dont know what your desktop looked like but mine is great thanks. I dont care about the O/S footprint as disk space is cheap and the min size of SSD these days is 128GB anyway.
My office environments where i work use Windows and Microsoft Office. Why would i want to turn up to a client with some alien O/S and non compatible programs?
If you get your kicks by using it then fine, but please dont tell me i'm "wrong" or am "too stupid to know otherwise" just because i dont want to be bothered with a "solution" for problems i dont have and that will leave me less than 100% compatible for the purposes i need it for.0
