Only £2 a year if you choose to go to Europe. Get some perspective for goodness sakes. Other holiday destinations are available.

Wouldn't this have happened anyway as the U.K. isn't part of the Schengen Agreement?

I 'think' that being in the EU gave 'immunity' from needing it.
  • Of course I buy a travel insurance policy on top of the EHIC but that policy is likely to be more expensive. Particularly for those with pre existing conditions.

An EHIC does not cover repatriation to the UK if such is required, so for that alone a travel insurance policy is essential IMO.

As far as I can tell, citizens of non-Schengen EU countries will not need an ETIAS to enter the Schengen area.

Citizens of countries that currently don't need a Schengen visa will be required to obtain the ETIAS for a stay of up to 90 days (not for study or work), and these countries are 'very likely' to include the Brexited UK :
Will British citizens be required to have the ETIAS authorization?

Since the UK is going through the Brexit procedures, it is still unclear of what the conditions for Britons wishing to enter the EU will be. However, the British are very likely to fall under the ETIAS program.

As the negotiations for the UK leaving the EU proceed, the situation will be clarified and British citizens will understand whether they have to get the ETIAS or not.

We always travel in Europe with just an EHIC card. I've got plenty of money in the bank though because I haven't wasted it on insurance over the years. You don't need an air ambulance - you just stay there. There is no point repatriating a dead body. Do people buy travel insurance for UK holidays?

Remind us of this when your relatives are setting up a funding page to get you home after an accident/illness, so that I don't contribute.

Passing away is not the worst case scenario if you take seriously ill within the EU.

Here is 1 article which suggests it https://www.simoncalder.co.uk/travel-faqs/brexit-mean-travellers/

I can't predict it but, as many insurers now require us to use the EHIC when possible, they may charge more when it isn't valid.

    So that's a 'no' then.

I find comparing paying £6 every three years to tens of thousands of people losing their lives in one of histories darkest hours rather disrespectful to their memory to be honest.

I hope the people who voted for the country to leave feel suitably ashamed of themselves.
