Except that you will also have to allow for expensive travel insurance once the EHIC card can't be used.

I've never paid much more for travel insurance to countries outside the EU compared to travel insurance to EU countries. It's no biggie.

Who would go abroad on holiday without travel insurance?

You or I would never dream of doing such a thing but I wonder what the statistics are on the number of people who do go away without even thinking of getting insurance. Of course, they are always first to complain when something goes wrong and they find themselves "stranded" or faced with a big medical bill.

I've never travelled without insurance. It really isn't expensive for most people, family worldwide cover for a year for us is around £100. Only a fool would travel without it and rely solely on the EHIC, so no, an allowance won't have to be made for 'expensive' travel insurance.

& that is why you get so many people crowdfunding to get their holiday companion home when the companion falls ill & needs an air ambulance to come home or, worse, bring the body home.

And it serves them right,if everyone who travelled abroad purchased travel insurance the cost might come down a little bit:rotfl:

I believe that TUI require customers to take out their travel insurance when booking a holiday package or cruise, unless they tick the box to say they have adequate cover elsewhere.

Not sure if Thomas Cook or Jet2 etc. have a similar requirement.

Given the amount of naive people there are out there, I'd make it compulsory for people to have travel insurance before they travelled.

How you'd monitor it I have no idea
