It's official Tescos policy so they definately should honour it- it's not down to the discretion of the staff in the store.

We should encourage other supermarkets to implement the same policy by immediately reporting any misprices to Trading Standards. Remember mispricing is illegal, and this policy actually works in Tescos' favour if it enables them to correct misprices before they get fined.

My experience at Asda is that they too make pricing mistakes on the fresh meat, where the pack price/kg differs from the shelf edge price or promotional signs in the store.

However, they are sometimes reluctant to accept that they have made an error - i.e. sometimes customer service have said that the pack price is correct and the other prices are irrelevant. I did write to one Asda store manager, following such comments, but never received a reply.

Trading Standards have told me that a trading offence is definitely committed in such cases where the shelf price is lower - it's misleading pricing.

Asda do sometimes refund the difference and give a £2 gift voucher - although they do not appear to have a clear, upfront policy like Tesco. I believe the Tesco policy is much better - it makes the job of customer service staff easier, helps to minimise confrontation with customers and gives an incentive to customers to highlight errors and enjoy the process (!).

I find dealing with Asda more confrontational, as the staff there do not have a clear policy to follow.

I can only assume that different supermaket chains place differing levels of importance on their obligation regarding pricing accuracy.

I managed to receive three products free in my big shop tonight, but it was more by luck than good judgement, and is unlikely to be repeatable in other branches

They had one special offer on a selection of continental cheese portions if you bought two, a special offer on large blackberry yogurts if you bought three (38p each but three for 75p), and Mr Bagel cinnamon bagels 99p a pack BOGOF

All three offers expired at midnight on 26th July and I bought mine shortly after midnight, so the computer had reverted to standard price on them all. Apparently the member of staff that goes round in the evening removing such promotional labels was off ;)
Thanks to all who post constructively.

  • Not sure whether others have noticed this.....

This evening I bought 2 packs of reduced indian meal rice (on the buy 2 get a pound off). The reduced sticker had not been put over the original barcode properly on one pack and so I was charged the original price and not the reduced price. I was refunded the full amount, so overall 2 packs of rice cost 55p + 62p - 100p-78p = -61p

So keep a look out for those misaligned reduced stickers!

Fill your baskets with this one....

Organic British Topside / Toproast Joint

£6.xx on the shelf per kg, £7.49 per kg on the pack.

My wife picked the last one up in Blackpool today, a cheeky £6.17 worth :D

I have not tried this but I noticed yesterday in my very little Tesco that there was a Lynda le Plant paperback book which had a big round price sticker on it but the shelf edge price was 1p different. Nagging husband hassling me out of the shop stopped me from seeing what it came up as on the self scan machine, yes finally found one that works in our store!

I dont think that I would try it in my store with just one item but if I had a couple of mis priced items I would, jst on principle.

Anyone out there who would argue the toss for a 1p difference?!

    I argued for a penny's difference today. :D

Was looking for the Irish Cheddar, which wasn't mispriced. However, spotted a Value Mild Cheese (funny how they aren't allowed to call it Cheddar), medium size, pack price £3.35 /kg, shelf price £3.34/kg.

It was a lot of hassle getting my refund, though. Dunno whether because it was a small Metro store and they're not used to troublemakers like us :D. Eventually, the manager tried to fob me off with 50p (eh?) but I insisted on the full refund, which I got. They weren't being nasty, just faffed about a bit too much.

Not the greatest cheese, but will do for cooking. :)

Dont do what I did. Found Tesco Healthy Living Skinless Chicken breasts today, pack price £7.50kg, shelf price £7.03 kg. Bought two packs worth £10.24 total and took them to customer services, sadly she went to check it out and found there were some packs with £7.50 on them and some with £7.03, I had obviously taken the £7.03 ones. Then she asked me to go and get the shelf label (while she was on the phone to someone) when I did there was a £7.50 label behind the £7.03 one. She said a customer must have played around with them! All she would offer me was a full refund and then put through the £7.03 packs if I wanted them. She said "after all I assume you still want the chicken?"

I said no I dont, because its misleading so I got the refund. A bit embarrassing, but hey ho worth a try!

Most people just see the shelf edge label, grab som chicken, check the use by date, pay and go. So are customers supposed to check the label has not been tampered with or that there are several prices on different packs etc? Sound too much like customers doing unpaid work for Tesco LOL

That's bad luck. If you'd felt like arguing they might have backed down. After all you were doing your shopping in a hurry and thought you were buying your chicken at £7.03 per kg. Did she know? Is that why she sent you back for the ticket?

Finally managed to take advantage of this deal :D . Value chicken legs were 66p/lb on the pack, 63p/lb on shelf ticket (also packs marked 61p/lb but I ignored those ;) ). Also Fitness cereal on high shelf, someone had put the more expensive (£2.48) boxes "with fruit" together with the ordinary boxes but short people like me (:D) can't read the variety, just see the price ticket as being £1.98 per box. Showed Customer services assistant where I found the cereal and then the chicken, meat manager was in the same aisle and removed the shelf ticket as soon as she told him, saying just refund the difference. As we walked back she repeated to me what the meat manager had said, I'm thinking "Hmm, we'll see". Back at the desk, made a point of reading the policy behind her and said you're supposed to refund them aren't you? Yep she says. Very happy with my free chicken (donated to parents since I have no room in the freezer!) cereal is grim though  despite being free.
