  • Very late to the party but could you please put me down for £4k? I’ll upload my monthly totals ASAP.

Thanks for all the varied responses relating to my query about the spending of any savings made!!!

So far I have been counting money saved into my holiday account as it is savings I’ve made this year. However I will be spending some of it (hotel, flights etc already paid) and the rest will carry over as a kickstarter for next years big trip.

I think I need to give it some more thought about what I’ll do moving forwards. I’ve also been counting money moved into other savings that will eventually get spent (saving for a future house move etc) so I’m not sure I want to stop counting all that as it’s really positive for me to track it and be held accountable on here!

If there's some you want to count and others you don't an Excel spreadsheet might be the answer.

I use YNAB (which is basically a glorified pretty spreadsheet) so I have certain "pots" of money that I add to each month but don't count towards savings, because they will be spent (TV licence, MOT, insurances, subscriptions etc), and a couple of "pots" that I do count (house deposit and holiday fund this year)

So my savings each month is adding up everything I've managed to put into my two counting savings pots, minus the spending in my holiday pot for the month.

I mean, all money will get spent eventually, whether that's on a house move next year or a slightly nicer sponge bath in a care home in your last days, so I don't see why a vague plan to spend it some day should stop you counting it.

#112 reporting in for August. Managed to save a little more than I was expecting and came in at £524. This means I've asked for my target for this year to be increased from £9,000 to £10,500.
September is looking to be a lean month for saving at the moment, but things might change.

#26 declaring £4,800 for September and achievement of my 2019 target of £7000 + an additional £1,300 on top. Forms updated.

DH had an old car project stashed under a sheet for 15 years and finally admitted he had lost interest in restoring it. I persuaded him to sell it and plump up our savings account. It sold last week and the money is now in our savings account. :T:T

This year has been very different from last year. I managed to make regular monthly savings last year whereas this year it has been all lump sums.

#157 reporting a reasonable £462.28 for August and form updated. Not bad as I had to pay out close on £500 for 3 weekends accommodation this month.

I've been absent for the past 3 months, but I have been saving, I've just not sorted out the finances and totalled the amounts up, I've just been mega-busy.

    Here is what I have saved in the past 3 months;

    - £1,279.34 (June)
    - £1,299.96 (July)
    - £1,291.05 (August)

This considering that I had an unexpected issue where money went out. So considering that hiccup, I'm still on track in hitting my saving target for the year.

It's good to see that many are still sticking to saving each month. The spreadsheet is looking very strong at the moment.

UPDATE: I've surpassed my savings goal for the year, wow, I'm speechless!

  • Congratulations to those hitting their 2019 targets already! Well done!
Save £12k in 2025 #33 £2531.77/£5000 (If this carries on I might have to up my target!)
