In my team they use a website that allocates the person you are buying a gift for, plus they can add suggestions (amazon links), the person who got them can even ask for hints if they are struggling (anonymously of course).

I’m disgusted at people being so nastily vocal moaning about the name they picked and putting them back!!!
Hardly the spirit of Christmas is it!

Anyway, I don’t get involved with all that, but the first level managers do.
  • LOL! We recently cancelled Secret Santa...to send the present money on going (my idea of hell) bowling at a later date with the competitive lot... Misery extended to new year. See it could be much, much worse :):o
  • Secret Santa was suggested by our new Team Leader last year. I said I was happy if others wanted to do it, but I wouldn't be taking part. I don't need or want a Secret Santa Christmas present and I don't want to waste money buying a gift that is unsuitable for someone else. Most of us have enough don't we? I suggested doing a charity gift as a team instead. Everyone agreed. So we did a couple of Christmas boxes for Operation Christmas Child. This year, we've done a couple of boxes of essentials for women and their children who have had to leave abusive partners. Much more worthwhile than Secret Santa in my view.

  • Bah humbug.

Either opt in or out, just don't moan about your decision and if you go ahead then do it with good grace and the spirit of the season.

It's a work secret santa. You're not donating a kidney.

Take it on the chin and buy a non-descript present for the amount you were told, if you're that against it. Done. It's a non-problem.

Maybe your secret Santa will gift you a mirror, to practice saying no with.
Honestly why any adult just doesn't say no , maybe it's a symptom of the atmosphere or culture of the OPs job and it's actually the job that is the problem ?

And some people are better than others at thinking on their feet! I'm sure a lot of us can relate to the OP's predicament of having agreed at the time to something we later came to regret, once we'd had time to digest and think about it.
  • After receiving a SS gift of an I.O.U two years on the trot from the same person (I recognised the writing and we worked side by side) and she never did buy the gifts, I had no problem saying no to joining in after that.

I'm amazed at some of these comments. I'm in 3 SS this year - work, friends and a sports club and I know that all the gifts will be nice and well considered without spending a fortune!

Oh and I think the fake scratch card story is really mean, bully or no bully.
