:rotfl::rotfl: I didn’t know such things ‘existed’
  • Its perfect for those people who when asked what they'd like for Christmas say ' oh don't get me anything'

knowing full well they'd be gutted if you didn't.

You could say you looked long and hard to find the ' nothing' they wanted.

Well they clearly do where I work, it’s meant to be fun not a chore and if it’s a chore just choose something else. I would have opted out if it was via email or a note but I was asked in front of everyone.

    You should have

Hindsight is a lovely thing! If I knew the reaction to it I would have had zero qualms saying no in front of everyone. I was only reluctant to do it because it’s tacky not because I knew they would be openly annoyed drawing people say right by them.

I would just say you are already involved in 2 secret santas elsewhere and can't face doing a third!

Isn't it a bit late for the OP to do that because the draw has already been made?

    Hi,

Very first world problem, but I work in a section of an office that is less than friendly. I got asked in front of them if I would do secret Santa and reluctantly said yes  It’s not my thing, and I barely have a relationship with them despite my efforts (they’re known for this).

Anyway, the hat goes round and one manager wanted to swap describing them as “even worse” than their last pick, other management were openly moaning about their selections to the point of borderline throwing a tantrum. Another person described another person’s pick as a “crap one”. I’ve never encountered such rudeness and would rather just not bother now.

I don’t like Secret Santa but don’t want to be wasting double figures on a bunch of people who don’t like me and are so openly mean! The numbers won’t be affected and I doubt they’d even miss me. In other places I’ve worked an email will go out and you’ll sign up to go in the hat - no pressure - but I’ve never heard people slag off their choices like this? Would you take your name out and risk being one of the choices they’ve openly moaned about or just play along?

My husband can relate to that as he works in a large office, mainly women there and they insist the secret santa tripe. He is strong-willed like me and puts his foot down and says no and some people half joking say he is antisocial, FYI he is not. The reason he won't do this rubbish as you stated.

However, many years ago when he was younger and worked in a 50/50 call centre environment of males and females there was a junior manager there and she was a bully and she thought she was the captain of the ship. So my hubby and his best mate there got one of those fake scratch cards where you ALWAYS win a massive prize every time - so along with a small gift and I think they had a limit of a few quid they tied in this side present the funny scratch card. They (my hubby and his mate did not pick that managers name but they just addressed the present to the bully)
then went to the office party a week before Christmas and only the two of them know (safer that way) - the bully was half drunk already as usually and they kept an eye on here opening her two lots of presents and the bully citing she was well liked as got a bonus - then she got the scratch card and slagged that off as she claimed she never bought one, but then with the help of her real friend they scratched the card, took a few moments and she thought she'd won 100k I think it was, she jumped and shouted for joy and then started phone the fake winners phone number whilst my hubby and his mate tried to control their ROFL.

The bully was upset once it clicked but took a good 2/3 minutes and then she was upset:D

My hubby still shares this story and everyone has a good old LOL.

The moral of this fact based story is, if you are being forced into this tacky secret santa and you have more than 25/30 people in the office, go for it
    :D
