...and, when outside of the EU we can import cheaper migrants and lower business costs. The 2 food production businesses which I personally know about spend a big chunk of their overheads on labour.
More profitable business will free up more money for infrastructure.
Obviously, we need to ditch the NMW, but that's just a matter of time.
Yes, before long we'll be able to open the workhouses again and make the poor toil for nothing. Children too.
It'll be just like 1890 all over again.0 -

I'm happy to accept that evidence, but there needs to ba an ackowledgment that we are always working in arrears. On day 1 they have immediate access to the NHS, etc but have made no contribution to those services.
And there must be instances where the contribution made by those on the lowest wages, such as seasonal fruit pickers, may takes years to equal the services available.
But they'd still be ahead of the locals since we won't have paid for their education or early years care.
Contrast that to the Be it retirees who migrant to Spain.0 -
Migrants are almost all working age and in good health, so not that likely to need to use it. Sure, accident or illness could put them in arrears pretty quickly.
But they'd still be ahead of the locals since we won't have paid for their education or early years care.

The ‘locals’ don’t have to be ahead of anyone, their rights to access services are inalienable. One of my reasons in voting Leave was to make the differential between the rights of UK citizens and EU citizens when it comes to accessing services.
Most births in London now are to foreign born parents it is said and it is ludicrous to suggest that 3.7m EU citizens are not contributing greatly to the pressures on our schools and hospitals etc.
Not for the first time your antipathy toward U.K. born citizens is writ large in your posts.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -
Sounds like you'll be ripe for the hybrid public/private service, where you've got no chance of a free appointment but any you want at £40 a pop.
Up in the socialist hellhole that is Scotland, with a government that wants an nhs, we have a walk in system; if you're booked in by 10:30 you'll be seen. Minimum waiting time is 2 hours though even if you get there for it opening (because people queue for an hour and a half upwards to get in). It's terrible, but still so much better than you guys get it.
I can't wait for when you finally get independence, we might actually be able to fund the nhs then instead of funding your lot. We send far too much money north of the border, as is evidenced by the fact that Sturgeon is desperately trying to find ways of spending it, I would love to see what would happen if she actually had to fund the expenditure.
And yes, I want British born people to have priority over people not born here, why shouldn't we, that is the way it works in other countries. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Now as I read the above diatribe, you blame foreigners for poor UK driving standards, lack of health and safety and damaging UK society and then in continuing piece of bile the NHS. I do wonder if these vitriolic comments are trolling but I give you the benefit of the doubt on that. But you may perhaps see why I look at your words with disbelief - the notion that only foreigners use fog lights badly (while you of course are such a perfect driver who has never forgotten to switch yours off?) for example.
I do agree that anyone living in our country should have a basic level of English speaking. Unfortunately some of the indigenous population are not shining examples. One of your inarticulate fellow travellers was on LBC this morning. He too thought immigration and foreigners were to blame for all our national ills. His take on the refugees crossing the Channel in boats was that they should all be allowed to drown and we should not waste time rescuing them. He then turned to legal immigrants with a similar rant to yours.
When will you realise that the problems of this country are due to personal, corporate and government debt and a decade of austerity while a small part of the population has done very well at the expense of the rest?0 -

Well said.
It’s been a feature of Brexit that some EU citizens many of whom display a staggering sense of their own worth have felt the need to harangue UK citizens simply because they’ve exercised their right to determine the direction of their own country.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -
Unfortunately Bob your arguments are too complicated for most people....they like easy scapegoats and immigrants/foreigners fit the bill!
It's nothing to do with 'liking'.
Back in the mid/late 90s it was made very clear to me by the American bosses that they were bringing in Indian specialists, and they were pretty open about the reasons too.
They could pay these people less, and expect them to work circa 12 hour days effectively.
I've spent enough time with these guys to like them, but I recognised they were also my competitors.
I had to play on any edge available to me, to maintain a competitive advantage and retain income.
These guys, if openly asked, would do exactly the same.
In some sectors of the economy it is tough now, and in the face of growing competition, you do whatever it takes to ensure you feed your own family as opposed to others.
The UK economy is NOT a charity. It's a business environment. The EU do not care particularly whether UK workers lose out to the newer EU workers. It's not their priority.0 -

And if your lot had put that on the side of a big red bus I can guarantee you'd have lost the referendum.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

So it's all just a race to the bottom? I guess that's the JRM plan but I'm not surebthats what many voted for.
If we don't address the challenges from the growing economies in the Far East, you can forget about any race.
We won't even be on the starting blocks.
There are between 0.5m and 1m illegal migrants here in the UK (depending on which figures you prefer). Without a passport the hourly rate is not much more than £2-£3 per hour. Even Big Issue sellers are run by gangs.
The bottom is already here. It's just a question of who profits.0
