This may be the Corbyn strategy but if Brexit goes ahead in either of the present forms my bet is that May will be gone by the party conference. As the consequences unfold, she may be forced out sooner. But with Brexit a fait accompli, the Tories will unite behind a new leader and Corbyn willbe seen for the paper tiger he is and lead his party to defeat. The Tories will not make the mistakes of 2017 again.

Maybe, but as things stand the least worst way of having a chance of being the next government is to not be associated with being this one. Which is why May is still leader.

There may be an about face in the Tory Party, but it will need the Tories' eternal civil war over Europe to be put to bed somehow; and I can't see the Brexit that's coming delivering that possibility.

Matt L and others who support a no deal Brexit have never really addressed the impact of adopting WTO terms

One of the other issues is that while it might suit UK and the EU to levy a lower % tariff between them compared to other nations, without a trade deal they cannot do this even if they want to do so. The terms imposed must be the same for all nations.

I presume like most people, they don't really understand the ramifications of what they're suggesting. I don't pretend to be an expert on trade, but I can see leaving the EU without a post EU plan is complete insanity, and the Brexiters have no post EU plan.

At the moment we have a morning of watching a crowd of red faced xenophobes waving little plastic flags at one another on our TV scenes, one day in March, and not a lot else scheduled after that.

The Department of Transport has just blobbed 100 million quid on booking extra ferries at Dover because they're worried that No Deal will cause chaos that will leave key goods stranded. That's things like medical supplies and food. Things we really need.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/no-deal-brexit-plans-britain-to-spend-100-million-on-ferries-2018-12?r=US&IR=T

This means the D of T is the only part of the government that has actually arranged something for Brexit day, and it's costing £100 million.

I'm failing to see where we are better off in this mess.

"no state can truly be called democratic if it offers its people no escape from poverty, and that no country can truly develop so long as its people are excluded from power."

That hopefully makes people realise how lucky we are to be born in the UK where we have true democracy.

Why do you think withdrawing artilcle 50 is off the table?
The default position is that, in the absence of agreement on the meaningful vote, we leave on 29th March with no deal. There needs to be further legislation to overturn the current law and as the majority of MPs voted for the Withdrawal Act and also to trigger A50, it seems unlikely enough MPs will be able to agree to cancel the whole process.

Unfortunately, the MPs we have are not in tune with the majority of their constituents which is leading to a constitutional crisis of confidence in our democracy. Maybe Her Majesty will need to sack them and finish the job!

MPs will need to think long and hard about their role in this historical process over the coming weeks. Hopefully a disaster can be averted and the majority can find a way to respect the 2016 decision.

Withdrawing A50 doesn't solve the local political impasse does it.

It would mean the UK having representatives in the upcoming EU elections, without any clear idea on the future commitment of the UK to the EU project.

Personally, I think it is not difficult to spread turmoil and factions from an UK level up to an EU parliamentary level.

That might not be a bad thing, if you want the right of centre group to take control btw.
  • This whole thing is a joke. This , in my opinion, was only the result of years of failure to address immigration for fear of being branded racist by government. They say that WE hugely overestimate the number of migrants, yet they have no clue how many there are.If i use my town as a way to work this out , the numbers are underestimated. In alot of workplaces, the majority of workers are foriegn. This has become a health and safety risk. Communication has become a problem as there are now more barriers , no matter how good the english is.There is many non english speaking workers, yet all safety signs etc.. are only written in english.I think all workers need to be identifiable by the level of understanding they have of any english spoken instuction i may give them. All you hear is foriegn language in a lot of places, so its time to address the sensitive issue of making it mandatory to speak english to a minimum standard in the workplace. Next thing, the standard of driving on the roads is a disgrace. And this is a result of foriegn drivers. The standard on foriegn roads can vary widely to our own.Yet they can drive on the license they have gained from below standard tests. This is putting everyones lives in danger, surely? Its not just the foriegners, when was the last time you seen a policeman pull over a car for having a light out?And what about the idiots who think its cool to drive around with fog lights on all the time? This is dangerous yet goes unpunished. This is turned into a rant i know but its frustrating. If there is another vote, then im all for marching down to london and making my anger known , regardless of how id vote. And who is giving Tony Blair the time to express his opinion? That clown should be locked up for his lying over the years, and for his part in this mess.Of course more migrants working here is better for the economy, because its more taxes. But is it worth the damage its doing to society? Europe is trying to make everybody equal.but
  • Our standard of living is lowering to accommodate for this uniformed standard across europe.if things were that bad in the country they come from, surely coming here is a massive improvement in terms of standards etc.. but its at our expense. The NHS is another thing, the stress its under because of foriegners is huge, no matter what they say, waiting 3 weeks for a doctors appointment? !!!!!!? Ease immigration, ease stress on our public services. If not, get a grip on the free movement of people until we can police it properly. Tell the french to pipe down and leave our fish alone. Fair play to May for having the balls to try sort this out, but i just wish they were bigger. MPs should not be in opposition, but working together on issues like this. But whatever, nothings going to be done about any of this, and il be forced to sit back whilst the dilution of our once 'Great' Britain is complete, and then il be an old angry man who has a grudge against everyone and everything. Im far from 'racist' , but im getting nearer by the day. Thanks everyone.

Can someone please remind me (see my user name) which particular food item is it which incurs a 45% tariff under WTO?

I do hope it isn't something I like because enough food has gone up already this year without there being extra high tariffs on it!

Fine, we can do all that without leaving the EU. Try settling in the Netherlands if you can't speak Dutch and don't have a decent job. There's no reason why the UK can't do the same thing. There never was.

Neither does enacting it, which is the problem.

At least withdrawing A50 keeps the money rolling in until we figure out what to do.
