You have to go back to body pump cupkate - it sounds great fun. And tell us what other classes you go to!
MallyGirl - I remember when my kids were learning to drive!! And even better when the first one passed their test. Younger child needed to be taken somewhere, older child had just passed test. I was about to grab my coat to do the taxi service thing, when older child, keen to show off their new skill said, 'I'll take you!' So I made a coffee and put my feet up. Bliss!
I'm still going to the gym every other day, so off I went this evening. A truly grotty evening. Some areas not far from here have had snow - all we've got is exceedingly cold rain. The sort of rain that feels like its out to get you. Got to the gym (not far enough away to justify taking the car...), and there were only 3 of us there - and that included the instructor!! I love the fact that they still run the class, even when numbers are low (hate it if I've made the effort and then it's cancelled) - although I drew the line once when I turned up and realised I was the only one there! There had been 17 people on the previous session, so not sure why numbers were so low (although the weather was probably a major factor). Anyway, we had a good session, it felt like I had my own personal trainer! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

This taught me just how lousy I am at self-motivation; long suspected, but now confirmed! If I don't have a 'cheerleader' nagging me along, and ideally a few classmates to 'compete' with -- in a good way, not actually competing of course -- I mess around, don't work as hard as I could or should, and then boredom sets in. Even though I am generally entirely fine with just my own company and not easily bored, my 45 min solitary spin felt like it lasted about three weeks.
This, and having fixed time slots in my calendar that I cannot easily dodge or find excuses for not doing, are the two main reasons why I take classes at my gym. I am actually quite envious of people who can work out properly without any external motivation. Not my forte, it seems!0 -

I only have the one but she needs driving somewhere and collecting later (or sitting in a car park with a book) 3 evenings and both Saturday and Sunday mornings every week so it will be a big change once she can take herself. We bought her a car this week - not very MSE but she can't drive ours and she will need to practice.
I don't think I have fully got my head around the concept of free evenings/weekends as it has been so long since I had them. This is when I hope to be able to go to the gym/pool as the older dog is just slowing down so much that walking her isn't raising the heart rate any more.

I have been in a couple of classes of just two, but on the one occasion when it was just me, I suggested that the instructor go home early (and still get paid!), and said I would do my own thing in the gym. It was a 45 min spin class, so I can easily do the same 45 min on my own, right?

My wife is exactly the same. Her current gym's system of points mean prizes seems to motivate her even further. She got her silver star yesterday with over a week to go, not that surprising really as she goes five time a week, sometime more.
I just wish the gym was closer.0 -

I find a step class gets my brain working as well, as the routines can be tricky to master to start with but I really enjoy it.
Another bonus is I sleep really well when I get more exercise.
Well I managed my 4 classes in one week. A first for me!!
Just been to step tonight and will see what else I can fit in this week.Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -

Sorry i have not been following this log since i posted before xmas,
no its a long while since i recieved these life changing injuries & old age related ailments have now set in good and proper." but", im trying to get myself in shape to complete a triathlon in a few months. Its not going to bad in what i call training , today i did a 30 mile cycle ride , stopped for a brew at 15 miles & got home for dinnertime, then i had my egg butty for my dinner & fell a sleep in the chair for 30 mins, i had been up since 5am with my osteporosis (stiffness) along with all the other boring ailments that i suffer from.
Then when i did wake up i went to the gym to do some running & today i managed 5k , but i have managed 8k last week . in february i am aiming for 9k , & March will be 10k.
to-morrow i am doing my 70 lengths swim, & then im supposed to be meeting my mate , to do the same route cycle ride, if it is not snowing , if it is i will be back in the gym & probably do a 6k run & time in the lovely warm sauna.
I did try last year to train for the same triathlon, but my knee would not play ball , it was my so called good leg letting me down as it was over compensating for my bad leg due to my disability.
This year i am trying a different training routine & so far touch wood its working for me, im doing a lot more stretching and so far its going well and im not trying to kill myself as i really need to compete for myself , probably for the last time.
My d.in.law physiotherapist says i am mad and that nothing can really help me as my body is well out of line, she is right but im a stubborn old get.
i am just a old age pensioner & i do not have any other benefits , only my old age pension, i suppose because i want to do the things that many a person would probably think twice of doing,
If anything is going to stop me doing the triathlon , it will be the running, but im in it to finish it !, not win it.:)
Please keep your fingers crossed for me.0 -
Wow robotrobo that's amazing. Love the way you just dropped the word 'triathlon' into the conversation. Makes my 45 minutes at the gym look a bit feeble!! Fingers are firmly crossed.
Kantankrus - I'm so pleased that you did all 4 classes. You're a star. I totally agree about the sleeping. I'm not the world's best sleeper - but I know that I sleep better on the days I've been to the gym or done some other sort of exercise than I do on the days when I've done very little.
EdSwippet - I've rediscovered my competitiveness! I enjoy pushing myself, and I enjoy the 'class' element, being with people. I've been to gyms in the past where you just turn up and use the equipment, and found them oh-so-boring. 5 minutes on the treadmill feels like forever, I clock-watch all the time. Here, I hardly look at the clock at all - I'm almost always surprised when the end of the session comes around. Everything is in 4 minute chunks - just enough time to be completely exhausted, then you're off and doing something else and *surprise!* find that you can do it. And people are very supportive, you bump into the same people through the week, and there's a good spirit about the place. And as an 'older' member (not sure if I'm the oldest, but if there's anyone older than me, they don't look it!!), I enjoy being one of the guys.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Just back from three days walking in Derbyshire, so much more strenuous than the flatlands of North Lincolnshire. 21 miles covered around Cromford, Matlock, and Wirksworth, used a pole to assist balance on the particularly steep and slippery rocks and mud. I've never had a broken bone in my life, not about to start now. Upper leg muscles now aching.
Boosted my mileage for the Walk 1000 Miles in One Year Challenge. Now on 75.

Welcome back Ilona!!
And as we approach the end of January, well done to all the New Years Resolutioners who are still jogging, walking, cycling, and going to the gym like they said they would!! It can be hard to stay motivated when the temperature dips and there's snow on the ground. I sometimes thing New Years Resolutions would be easier to keep if we had New Year in June!! But sometimes something just clicks, and what started off as a New Years Resolution just becomes a way of life and you don't even think about whether to do it or not - you just do it, because it's now just what you do.
So keep up the good work all you January Joggers, soon you'll be February Fitties!!No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
