After run club was iced off I felt I ought to do something this weekend - I have just got back from a run in very blustery conditions and have broken the 40min barrier for 5k :) Just!

    Hi all,
Just read the whole thread, my you are all doing so well.
I need to lose about 2 stone, I have a few health problems so cannot do heavy exercise, I have dusted off my Wii and will start doing some of the routines on there including yoga moves.
Up until I retired at 62, I was a slim 9 1/2 stone woman who walked everywhere, what on earth happened :rotfl:
I will follow this thread with interest

And now I have the joy of having my foster granddaughter becoming my real granddaughter. Can't ask for anything better

    UPDATE,
As of today 180919. my granddaughter is now my official granddaughter, adoption finally granted

Well done harrys nan for making a start.:T

Are you able to start walking again? Even just a ten minute walk and build it up gradually. Walking is fantastic for the body and mind. A lot of my thinking goes on whilst I am walking. ;)

Only made two classes this week....the two step classes....(this mornings was a killer with a new routine)

Will be doing 4 again this week. Two steps and two yoga type classes.
I need to do something to take me out of my comfort zone as I havent ached all over for a while.......you know that ache that tells you youve worked out hard.

Might give it a few weeks and try a stretch and tone class. Did it years ago and my arms felt like they were going to drop off the next day!

    Hi,
I can walk ok in fact I take the dog out 5 days out of 7 for about an hour each day, I do need to use my inhaler and I do have to stop now and then to get my breath, the other 2 days I look after my daughters 7 month old while she is at work.
My worry is my leg muscles which seem weak, it's these I want to build up

Chair based exercise can be useful. Standing from seated is basically squatting, but you have the chair should you require any support. 2 or 3 Sets of 10 can be a good start, you can vary it to adjust difficulty and progress.
I'd recommend going to your local council gym and asking for advice or just to be shown a couple of things by an instructor qualified to properly advise based on your health conditions. You shouldn't even need to take out a membership if you just want to be shown a couple of things - most of us are happy to help.

  • Great to hear from you harry's nan! What you're doing is great, keep it up! How long do you feel your legs have been weak? Any idea why?

Kantankrus - It's good to feel that ache that says 'You achieved something there', but not good to feel the ache that says 'Whoa there, too much!!' And doing something is always always better than doing nothing!! I'm afraid I've missed a day this week. I try to go every other day, so should have been today - but it was father's 83rd birthday so off we went out for a meal. Tomorrow is another day!!

MallyGirl - I'm seriously impressed about the pb for 5km. There's a parkrun near here - I keep thinking I should go along, but if I'm being honest with myself I think it won't happen until the warmer weather.

Take care out there on the ice and in the snow good people!!

Hi, To be honest, I'm not really sure. I worked in a job for 25 years where I was on my feet for 90% of the day and I do sit down more nowadays although I don't sit for hours, I'm up and doing jobs or playing with the dog. I guess (although this shouldn't happen ) it's down to age. I am lucky in the fact I can still get out and about, my dog has to be walked and I love mooching around the shops.

  • trailing spouse......think you are allowed a day off for a birthday ;) Hope you enjoyed your meal.

harrys nan.........For someone with COPD you are doing fantastic!!

I know quite a bit about COPD as my mam has been suffering for years. She is 70 and whilst still mobile......her situation has got much worse in the last year. :( We had a scare last year when she was hospitalised and the doctors refused to let her home unless she agreed to have oxygen in the house. She has resisted this for years but I have to say she has never looked so well!
She has little strength though and needs a wheelchair for most excursions outside the house.
She has never been one for exercising and I think it would have made a huge difference to her health now. So I would say keep up the good work!!
Its one of the things that keeps me going as I want to be a seventy year old that lives a full life. Smoking obviously played a huge part in the disease and Im not a smoker but who knows whats round the corner?
