Sorry for your losses, Sloth. I don't blame you for trying to keep yourself safe.
The odd time we've been out lately there are very few people wearing masks or using the sanitizer provided, although staff in shops are still wearing masks. We also try to protect ourselves in whatever way we can.

So sorry for you losses Sloth.Where I am in London hardly anyone is wearing a mask now. Not even on public transport where it's supposed to be a condition of carry. I'm still wearing mine and sanitising my hands where possible. I know more people now who have had Covid in the last four months then in the rest of the pandemic put together.Weather is rubbish today so I'm indoors and trying to decluttering some things from under the stairs. I had planned to go to the shop, but don't fancy it in the rain so I got some mince out of the freezer and I'm making a ragu. DP can have it with pasta and I'll have jacket potato and a salad with mine.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £3659

Happy_Sloth said:The virus isn't over ... my sister died just before charismas from covid, she was 51... tested positive Saturday, went into hospital on Tuesday, dead on Wednesday.., she was double jabbed... no underlying conditions that we knew about other than being overweight.
We've lost 2 close relatives to covid in the last 12 months, im underestimating nothing.
Like Toonie, I know a lot more people who've had covid in the last four months than in the whole of the rest of the pandemic. It hasn't gone. This is a good reminder for me - I had somebody in the house today to quote for replacement double glazing, and I'd asked him to wear a mask. He did too, no problem. I'm glad I asked2023: the year I get to buy a car13 -

I was watching BBCNW tonight interviewing people on the streets of Manchester a couple of days ago. We aren't in Manchester but thats our local news too. Some were "Fake News" "It's over" etc. One woman said "If you're gonna geddit, you're gonna geddit" I thought to myself and lord help those you infect enjoying your "freedom"I have learned there are many people very selfish , concerned only with their wants with no care for anyone else and often that includes their families and friends. It's a pity we can't see the virus as it lurks and also transmits. I began to think of it as a killer ready to pounce on the unwary and those not observing hands face space. If there was a gunman on the loose most people would take care.I remember when the Yorkshire Ripper was on the loose not just in Yorkshire but also in Lancashire. That terrified a lot of people. I used to look out of the windows with the lights off before going to bed to check no one was lurking in the front or back garden. It sounds silly nowOne night I noticed something glowing at the bottom of the back garden and dithered whether to go outside to look. I decided to check the children and went to bed .Next morning when the neighbours were around I went down the garden. A rather battered large glow in the dark football belonging to my son!I suppose many were relieved when Peter Sutcliffe was finally caught. Same with Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. I knew someone locally who was a male MH nurse in Ashworth Hospital one of those caring for Brady. A career nurse he retired early as the patient damaged the MH of all he was in contact with.Times I go out I have a killer lurking in mind. Stange thought but it keeps me focused.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

I was in St Mary's hospital having my first baby at the time of the Yorkshire ripper. There were rumours that he would attack a nurse next. Several of the nurses bought personal alarms . One tried hers out on the ward and couldn't turn it off.
It was a frightening time. We were all on edge.12 -
The fear of the Ripper didn't just worry women and girls those tapes he sent to the Chief investigating officer using a fake accent to put the seach off track would chill anyones blood and set back his eventual arrest by a long time so more died and families grieved. My four children were two different generations. After a friends funeral they asked where I would like to be buried. I'd mentioned I quite fancied a woodland burial going back to the earth. I did say if money was tight they could chuck me in the sea a short walk away. When Brady finally died there was an annoncement but it was pretty .well under wraps after that. I heard a few things from the Friend who worked at Ashworth and he heard from his friends there There were police officers and others all denied. Finally the truth was out. A heavily weighted pot had been secretly placed in the sea near here very late at night. Police and others in attendance as witnesses..I told the offspring Woodland Burial or put me in an old boat , the fishermen have lots, set it on fire and set me on my journeyI have Viking ancesters from way back and that seemed preferable. It was horrible how the Ripper would announce furture targets in advanceSo many still recall the fear in those times. He loved frightening people. Thankfully the police never gave up and got wise to some of his lies. he was not as invincible as he claimed and game over.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

I guess part of our prepping now has to be to stock up on Lateral flow tests whilst still free and easy to get? I am a family carer, and work with vulnerable people as a volunteer, so very worried in the direction we are going re lifting of all covid restrictions. I am going to find a safe dry place i can store any boxes, in date order for now, but already use a lot as need to test whenever I go out and in days after if i get a sniffle.
Last year our elderly cat died (we have 3 younger cats) but the cremation rate was eyewatering for someone trying to survive on benefits. So my other prepping this year is trying to put money by towards the additional cost of when our dog dies, she is 12 1/2 and slowing down lots.
On top of this I am paying extra on gas/electric, we are lucky enough to be on a 2 year fixed deal until November , but costs after that are going to be difficult. But it is so hard, benefit rates (carers and universal credit/disabled monies) didn't really stretch far in first place, trying to put money by for a rainy day is difficult.
I am going to be looking for thermal curtains for back door, hadn't before because the door is in kitchen and it seemed strange having curtains in kitchen, especially way mine is laid out, but we are in a drafty council house and really I need to keep warmth in. Anyway whilst thinking about curtains i suddenly realised that since covid has hit i haven't really done a bargain hunting charity shop crawl, a mixture of staying in and avoiding public transport and finding the few near me (moved in late 2018) over priced and understocked. Si in next few weeks i may have to do some research and see if i can discover some good charity shops to get to safely and explore.13
