Well @daz378, at least that's one thing less to worry about, having enough food in the flat. Has work been ok with you? Please look after yourself, and I hope you feel better soon.2025 Fashion on the ration

I have two chest freezers out in the garage (though I'm trying to empty one down, switch it off & use it as a grain store) and an undercounter one in the hallway, under the printer desk. There are 5 adults living here; I'm working on learning how to preserve stuff without using power (i.e. fermentation, chutneys & jams) which to my mind, is a more long-term solution.Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)10

Haven't been on this thread in a long time but have caught up every now and then. Feeling less than optimistic about the outlook for the UK and trying to do what we can to protect against future shortages / wage cuts / tax hikes etc.12

I think you're wise, CCW007. None of us know what's round the corner at the best of times, and somehow this doesn't seem like the best of times...Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)11

Well i have juggled my current freezer capacity and now have everything i need for christmas dinner! But i will be getting another freezer so i can fill with bread.
I have stocked up toilet rolls, not because of any shortage, although i notice there are less on shelves, but because its another autism thing, my kids are so fussy and unless i have one certain brand they aren't happy! I think i can cope with a lock down as long as i can get milk.
I think we are heading for a lockdown, at least where I am people have forgotten covid. Last week on bus we were down to 50% mask wearing, yesterday I was only passenger wearing a mask (driver wasn't either)!
I am still harvesting squash from garden, hopefully some will store whole into winter, i have loads of soups and chutneys. there are 4 pumpkins , 2 of which will be for halloween carving and 2 for eating. Lost all my tomatoes to blight this year but have about 200 chilies ripening in the greenhouse on 6 plants!
i am off on holiday to Scotland next week, for just a few days caring break, it will be my first break in a year so have been keeping my fingers crossed I don't catch covid in run up. I test regularly because i work with refugees and they are classed as vulnerable, and i have recently had anti body test for the Zoe study, worryingly showed no antibodies, I really thought i had had it early on , March 2020, i had all symptoms and was in contact with positive cases due to teaching ESOL but it appears I have managed to avoid so far! Glad to hear you aren't doing so bad Daz, that seems to be one of the scary things about covid we don't know how hard we each individually will be hit, my ex husband ended up in hospital in February and my eldest son caught it from him and was really poorly. My biggest fear has always been how my 2 autistic kids will cope as they don't do well around strangers and would struggle if needed hospitalism, so i am thankful both are finally double jabbed as of last weekend.11 -
In my corner of wetly green in Lancashire I am considered a complete Cassandra thinking we'll be back scouting online before Christmas, "Look!" say people waving the scout "green" status email, "look!" they say pointing at sunshine & I'm trying to stay polite & masked & where possible distanced & quietly pointing at the website Interactive map of cases | Coronavirus in the UK (data.gov.uk)...
Aye well, while several leaders are barrelling on with face to face plans a fellow leader with reservations has said they Enjoy scouting by zoom & we've devised a month of scouting online using things hoped to be available. Teaching someone to knit with a bootlace & disposable chopsticks (or pencils!) may not be easy but we can't assume wool and the proper needles. Festive origami using gift wrap, tinfoil & newsprint is a possible too - and as autumn gets underway we may encourage scouts to forage a few blackberries for "printing" - carve a design on a potato, dip in mashed berries & stamp onto paper... Not too many berries or spuds - they all have other, soundly valid, uses!
I really must get to Costco. I can face the political idiocies a lot better with a loaded cans storecupboard.13
