It's kind of official now. A local farmer was on the news saying that his Cannola harvest is in. Usually he has 18 grain wagons full and this year, he managed 12. He also said he had one of the better harvests in the area.
Cattle ranchers are sending their animals to market because it's too expensive to feed them. My province is proud of it's beef, so they must be hurting.

"Cannola" is rape to us Brits, isn't it?

I was told at the market this morning that there's a real shortage of raspberries; when I goggled in mild surprise & said I'm currently harvesting a magnificent crop of them at the allotment, the stall holder quite genuinely offered to buy them off me! No chance - they're being eaten/en-jammed/frozen as fast as I can bring them home. When I say magnificent, I'm bringing home a mid-sized saucepan-full every other day, and there are plenty more to ripen up, and the bees are still buzzing round the canes like billy-o. Not bad for what is technically a half-sized plot at 110 sq m. As per usual, some things have done/are doing well (spuds, beans, raspberries, sweet corn, kale) where others have been less productive - my biggest leek, planted out in May, is about 8" tall and the thickness of a pencil! Hopefully they'll catch up a bit now we're finally getting some rain and actual sunshine, but I suspect I'll actually be buying leeks (and other things) this winter. It's been a funny old summer, and probably much the same for our farmers.

I gave up on my tomatoes. I don't usually grow them but was given three plants, so had a go. I watered and looked after them and all I got was 10 green tomatoes!
On another track.....I was awake at 4.30 this morning, dreaming that my phone and all my cards were stolen from my purse. I then couldn't settle, trying to think what I would do if I was away from home, what passwords could I remember, did I have phone numbers for the card companies etc. etc. etc.......
I had the phone numbers saved on my phone, but if that was stolen/lost too, what would I do?
So...I've saved them, not the card numbers, on my goggle drive, and I know the password, so I hopefully could log in somewhere. Then I wondered if I would need to change passwords, and tried to remember them......
No wonder I'm half asleep now!2025 Fashion on the ration

Placed A order - lots of staple shortages own brand, baked beans, tinned spaghetti, plum tomatoes, squash (drink), pizzas, there was lots more however the school run this week has taken its toll and I can no longer think.
Tomorrow is a massive return things that I bought for school day, DS1 insisted on some different school shoes then decided after them being on for a whole 10 seconds at home that they hurt, fortunately I had an idea this might happen and had exactly the same style from last Yr in his size in the porch on the off chance, thank goodness I did. Then there are 2 coats and 3 pairs of trainers to return to next. I miss the days where I could just walk into a shop get what I wanted and leave, ordering online is really convenient if the item you ordered actually looks like the stock image and the fit is correct.

Today's visit to Sainsburys showed a lot of empty shelves. Mostly toiletries (lots of empty spaces in feminine hygiene) and other shelf stable supplies (cleaning, toilet roll etc). Will have to pop out to somewhere else to try and find things we couldn't get today. I'm glad I've invested in some reusable cloth pads. Think next time I have the spare money I'll buy another set of reusables. Biggest issue today was getting bars of soap, the only ones left on the shelf were highly fragranced, no good for me. Thankfully still got an unused bar in the cupboard, but that's definitely high on the priority list.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £36514

I noticed the lack of feminine hygiene products in Lidl and Asda this past week too, I've got enough for this month but need to have a search around to make sure I don't run out. I'm on the cusp of that age of things changing so don't want to invest in reusables when I don't know when everything might stop. I might have a look at some tutorials and see if I can make some for myself which will be cheaper than buying in.
There also seems to be a lot of gaps in the squash/juice aisles. Very hit and miss as to whether I can get apple juice, haven't been able to get any cranberry and raspberry here for maybe 3 weeks and no squash at all in Lidl this week. All things we can do without in the grand scheme of things.12 -
It's actually very easy to make re-usables; I did some years back, when on the cusp of no longer needing them. They were good, too, in those unpredictable days. DD2 makes & uses her own to this day; there are plenty of patterns online.
Another 850g of raspberries brought home this morning, along with a bag of just-popped-up spuds, enough beans for a meal for 5 and a courgette, plus a load of cabbage outer-leaves for the Girls (the chickens, rather than the DDs) from my neighbour, who's clearing his plot for the winter - he will be rewarded with half a dozen eggs! I keep my plot producing over winter where possible, feeding the soil with mulches rather then resting it, and am currently planting mooli, overwintering onions and broad beans, with garlic yet to go; the kale, leeks (if they ever get any bigger!) and chard will keep producing right through. Prepping live, if you will...

I believe that Primark now offer a 3 pack of period pants for £13. Can't speak for efficacy or anything else, but a cost effective possibility.February wins: Theatre tickets8
