Sis has a bottle of cola in her freezer - she drank most of it, then set it to freeze lying on its side, then stood it up. When her freezer is working, there is a little upright column of cola along the side of the bottle. When it has slumped, her freezer has been ineffective & she needs to apply judgement/caution etc.
Almost any non-alcoholic fluid will do, she just picked cola as it's strongly coloured.15 -

The freezer tip is a good one! Thanks for that.
I grabbed a Too Good To Go box from the local farm shop yesterday and it was huge! 3 loaves (2 malthouse, 1 white), 3 packs of malthouse bread rolls (6 in each), 1 big white bap, 2 tear and share bread loaves (1 cheese and onion and 1 cheese and bacon), a packet of beef crisps, a packet of popcorn, a packet of posh fudge and a packet of chopped tomatoes. All for £3! Freezer now full of bread! Lol
Collecting a morries one after 4pm. I think they are well worth it, though it's always a mystery what you get so doesn't suit everyone.February wins: Theatre tickets13 -
Ok, well my box from Morries was fab!!
£3.09 for: 12 clementines, 2 punnets of grapes, a punnet of strawberries, a big bag of conference pears, 3 apples, 6 courgettes, 6 heads of broccoli, 3 tomatoes, 2 lemons, 2 bunches of spring onions, 3 bags of parsnips, 2 turnips and 4 red peppers. A few bits were past it, ie had to chuck 2 clems, 2 lemons and a strawberry (not included in count above), but I am SO happy with that! Soup making tomorrow!!February wins: Theatre tickets14 -
Can anyone recommend any good kitchen knives? Today's supermarket delivery included a pork loin joint that was big enough to feed the whole of Cumbria. I wanted to cut it into two and freeze half but none of my knives would cope and I ended up using a coping saw from my diy cupoard!12

pineapple said:Can anyone recommend any good kitchen knives? We seem to get on well with Taylors Eye Witness kitchen knives. Not horribly expensive from Amazon, but all knives need occasional sharpening. I cannot get on with a steel, but the ceramic ones you draw the blade through are cheap enough, and I find work well.PS can I come to dinner please? Love pork loin.12

I feel like a lifeline has been cut off – I went to my corner shop last Friday and found out they were closing this week and next for a Covid Refurb. Sounds like a good plan to make better use of space – a large proportion of the store is alcohol and soft drinks but they intend to put in better fridges and stock a wide range of fresh food.I’m not sure what to do in the meantime. I’m out of milk and my usual bread but can’t face going further afield or dragging my shopping trolley with me.I shall have to make a decision because I need to go to the post office as well. I shall have a strong black coffee and think on this.9

I keep UHT milk and dried milk in store, and bread flour and yeast so I can make bread if necessary. I also find those vacuum packs of part baked baguettes are useful when I run out of fresh bread. Not exactly an emergency running out of bread and milk, but it shows prepping can also solve the minor inconveniences in life. One life - your life - live it!11

Sainsburys powdered milk (red packet) once mixed with water and chilled in the fridge, is very good. I'm fond of milk and very fussy.

Part baked loaves are really handy to have in - Aldi do a lovely sourdough one. UHT isn't quite the same but will do if necessary - i tend to try to use them up in a cheese or white sauce once i have normal in again.
We keep in some Oatley Barrista UHT milk which is nice in coffee and on cereal.
3 second - is there not a tesco's or sainsbury's local near you? or the local petrol station?I wanna be in the room where it happens11
