Worrying reports of outbreaks of a “highly pathogenic” H5N8 strain of bird flu in Cheshire, Devon, Gloucestershire and Hertfordshire over the past two weeks., plus outbreaks of H5N6 in other areas. Poultry farmer near me told to be on alert and that they maybe bringing in "lockdown" for hens as it is in the wild bird population. Apparently no one has been infected with the virus in UK and it has a low risk :-(

I had to abandon the car earlier today and walk part way home as the water board was repairing a leak and closed the road, I asked if the road would be open later, they were really helpful, slightly to helpful, when one man started to walk towards me and said he would help me with the buggy as I looked as though I was struggling due to keeping my distance on a slight slope, he went to grab the handle, I instinctively shouted at him "DONT TOUCH ME" It sounded as if he was about to attack me the way I shouted, I followed it up quickly with my Dad is extremely high risk but thank you, I think he understood, we then quickly walked past with embarrassment! I've become so use to dodging people whilst with 3 children on the school run I go into a fight or flight mode, I was still in fight mode. There were 6 of them all in close proximately to each other with no masks if one gets Covid they all will, which makes me think I need to get some more bottles of water/water storage in as I can't see the water board people being remotely Covid compliant.
Elaine, i've also seen locally reports of the bird flu, it is concerning. Can this be passed on through food?16 -

The whole country (England, certainly, but I believe Wales & Scotland too) is now an Avian Influenza Protection Zone, as of 5pm yesterday. Wish I'd had a bit more warning! My big birds are fine in their weldmesh, tarp-roofed run, but the bantams need to be covered up fast. I've ordered another cover for my half-dead polytunnel; fingers crossed it gets here quickly! I re-roofed the coop earlier on today, but can't actually keep them under cover until the polytunnel's complete again. We've had even less warning than last time... so we're locked down, and now the chickens are locked down too!Angie - GC Oct 25: £290.57/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)18

2020: the year that just keeps on giving *rolls eyes*. Hope you can get sorted quickly thriftwizard.
Test result was negative, as expected. Though must admit doubt crept in this time as was feeling pretty rough at that point. Improved a lot already. DD enjoyed children in need day at school yesterday, and we let her stay up later to watch the first hour of the show. She also earnt the 'hot choc friday' treat from school yesterday. Came home with a sachet and special sticker (covid times means they can't have it in a mug at school at the moment). She was ever so proud, but I still haven't managed to figure out how she earnt it. She just shrugs her shoulders when I ask lol.
Was pleased to see that CIN managed to raise circa £37million last night. Given the current climate, and how tough it is for many, I think that is an amazing figure.
Managed to get my tesco xmas delivery slot yesterday, but my word it was a bit stressful! I actually got through the virtual queue pretty quickly, but then kept getting an error message whilst trying to check out. Got there eventually though. Adding more xmas preps to our weekly shops now. Get the favourites (non perishable or frozen) sorted, then then the 'nice to have extras' on the last shop. That way, if there are items out of stock at that point, we won't be disappointed.February wins: Theatre tickets16 -
Got my Christmas slot sorted but there doesn't appear to be much in the way of seasonal food available to order for then. No turkey, cake, choc logs etc.
Yes I know I should make my own cake and choc log but I'm not going to, so there!! I'd rather go without.
As for the lack of turkey so far (Mr. M) there are a few extremely fat wood pigeons coming to my bird feeders. They should be afraid - very afraid.16 -
Hey, no judgment! I won't be making our yule log and MIL makes the cake (otherwise I'd probably buy). It's your Christmas, do what makes you happy
I think stock levels will probably change between now and then, so selection should be different before then.
Our turkey (and other Christmas meat) is on pre order from local farm shop. Collecting on 23rd. Didnt want to risk other places running out. But, I can also highly recommend the turkey parcel from Aldi. Not available until closer to Xmas day (think it was around 19th last year). No prep required, and it was delicious and also more than enough for our family of three (should anyone want/need a low effort turkey.February wins: Theatre tickets14
