It's lovely to read WC is still keeping going. He's a tough one.I don't think Mary Berry ever devised a recipe for a tea towel with jelly babies on. I'm still remembering the outrage when Mar asked about cooking a roast. I recommended MBs book of meat cookery and she was outraged there were no cooking an elephant recipes in it.I'm now wondering if there are Moose wandering around Scotland . She'd probably prefer the jelly babies but I'm pretty sure she can't have sugar now.Best wishes to you and all the family not forgetting WC.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
There but for fortune go you and I.16 -
Blue_Doggy said:I tend to regard “best before” dates, specially on tins, as a bit of a con by the manufacturers hoping people will throw out tins of perfectly good food on some arbitrary date, and then spend money on buying a load of new tins. I’ve never found any problem with using undamaged tins however old they are. Same with unopened jars of food preserved with oil, vinegar, or sugar. But reading threads on here I seem to be in the minority, which is strange for a site and forum dedicated to thrift.
However I have noticed that although some tinned meat - chicken and corned beef for example will sometimes have a date like 2025, all my tinned fruit tends to be much shorter dated, probably only a year or less. Is that because there's a worry that the acid may affect the tin, I wonder?
I've only ever had one problem. an apparently undamaged tin of tomato puree which decorated the walls and ceiling of my kitchen. Even then, if there had been any left to use it would probably tasted fine! Or perhaps not.15 -
I tend to rotate tins so that I use the shortest dated stuff first but I don't throw them out unless they are rusted or blowing. Some spices might be years out of date, as long as they are in airtight bottles, they are mostly fine. I keep them out of sunlight, not sure if that actually helps but I do it anyway.I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back13

Thinking hard.

We recently ate some tinned salmon which was quite a few years out of date (got forgotten about) which was fine but some baked beans tasted Ok although the beans were breaking up a bit. I threw some tinned toms out and a couple of tomato based sauces because they were a bit vinegary.15

Such a relief as I'm shopping for four households, DH and me, Dad, DD1, and DD2, all in separate houses, and all with health issues so don't want to go near a supermarket yet!The site says there will be a charge.'If you had already registered and have an active Priority Customer delivery pass, we have extended it until 31st March 2021. However, from 1st November some changes will apply, including slot pricing and a small fee for orders under £40'.So Tesco and Morrisons have recently upped their charges round here, Asda is following and that only leaves Sainsburys in this area. I can still get a delivery for £1 delivery charge with them but for how long? I guess business is flowing in now - no incentive to keep charges down. .2025 Fashion on the ration

My Dad has just opened and eaten a tin of peaches with a b.b.date of 2011
He said they were delicious but he wouldn't eat the OOD tin of tuna, he said it didn't look right, sort of greyish but it was only 7years OOD
I think he has far more OOD tins in his cupboard than in date, but he won't get rid of any of them. I have tried
Elaine add to the list Garnteg Primary Nursery class, my DD is a teacher there but she has Y1/2 this year and they are not affected.....yet.Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently17 -
@ MrsCD, I also had the email, the thing that has confused me is where they say from the 1st you can select your delivery date or a recurring slot, we have shopping delivered sat morning which I would think would be popular, will it be a free for all to select this recurring slot again or would it default to the existing one?! I may call them tomorrow if I get chance.
I had an email yesterday from DS school with a plan for remote learning should it be required it was quite full on, not in a bad way but I would hazard a guess more things in place/plan than during lockdown, have to do maths etc in the morning, have to be sat in front of screen for allocated zoom time or marked as absent.
Next door neighbours are "suppose" to be isolating along with the other numerous people that they have been out and about with, as one of them had a text saying they have been near someone with Covid, it's starting to get a little to real/close to home now. I'm on my own with the children from now on as my parents and I feel now is the time to retreat back into individual bubbles.14 -
I recently opened a 20 year old pot of home made black current jam. It wasn't made by me but I traded fruit in return for some jars of jam from the batch. He was a very keen jam maker and made hundreds of jars each year, so he had the process perfectly. There was no mould on the top and it still had a blackcurrent taste. That was over 3 weeks ago and I am still alive. I have more jam of similar age, different fruit so I will give each one a try as and when I need another pot of jam and see what happens.
