That's the reason I am in two minds singlestep as my DS regularly rubs his eyes. Although I can't see him using them properly if I am not there and if it gets that bad hopefully they will close the schools. We have already got safety glasses in so hopefully he would wear those if needed.10

RainbowsInTheSpray said:Nearest thing to a 'long life BREAD', folks..? Any suggestions? Are we really talking dry biscuits like cream crackers and ryvita..? No advances been made since WW2..?Just buy the flour, and don't turn it into bread until you need it, surely?I've been using my Panasonic for over 5 years now, and don't like the taste of shop bread any more.

There are many 'small breads' that can fill the gap if yeasted bread isn't available plain scones filled with your usual sandwich filling are very easy to make, potato bread made with cooked leftover mash, flour and seasoning can be cooked in a heavy based skillet on the hob and is nice with a topping or if you roll it into two sheets before cooking it (like pastry) you can put the filling inside before you griddle it, potato rosti or potato and grated root veg rosti makes a good pizza base which can be finished under a hot grill, pancakes and griddle scones either the scotch pancake type or Irish Soda Farls all are useful and easy to make, Socca/Farina are a pancake style flatbread made with chick pea flour in a pan on the hob, I have a breakfast recipe for Baking Powder Puffs which is scone like and they keep for a couple of days or Suffolk Rusks which are deliberately dried off in the oven after cooking and keep for at least a week. Loads of quick cooking things that will do the same job as 'ordinary bread' if it's not available. I'll happily post recipes if anyone wants them.13

Yes please to the recipes, the baking powder puffs and the Suffolk rusks sound most interesting, but they all sound good.£71.93/ £180.009

Mrs LW, I thought about starting off a traditional OS party on the Garden Fence thread to cheer everyone up, perhaps you could contribute to the catering? One life - your life - live it!8

Mrs LW, I've also been thinking of bread alternatives which can be cooked in a heavy frying pan or on a griddle, and was planning to try some out this weekend.
I often make "fritters" with various veggies, e.g. pumpkin or squash or sweet potato mixed with flour and an egg to make a stiff dough. Rusks have become a staple here, I use a South African beskuit recipe or Italian biscotti, buttermilk recipe goes down well. You have to get used to dipping them in your tea, or could be broken up as a breakfast cereal with milk (apparently that's how Grape Nuts were invented).10 -
I had an idea just now. If you (the main stockpile organiser and stower) become ill, will your significant others know where various items are stashed (presuming you have some kind of system)?
To that end, I have begun labelling cupboard shelves with numbers and each shelf will have a list of the items. I know if I get ill then DP will spend ages trying to find stuff (and perhaps won't be well either) so I figure this may save some vital energy. There'll be lists of shelf contents stuck to the cupboards for ease of reference. I'm reorganising my shelves today.
