The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

The top picture is just too horrible for us to be 'gawping' at it, it's a person not a picture to be shared for sensational reactions. Sorry if that's a harsh judgement but it's just not acceptable to me. Others may not find it as offensive as I do but if you could, would you take it away please?10

I'm with you MrsLW. Also, this thread is not the one to be sharing such things. It's a prepping thread, not a specific coronavirus thread. If you want that, the thread can be found in Discussion Time.
I spoke too soon about the Piriton solution. Another rough night. Does anyone know how you can stockpile sleep?! lol

Sorry about that, i didn't spot that.If they showed some of the videos iv seen today on the news EVERYBODY WOULD SOON BE A PREPPER.The more i watch the more im convinced the must be 1000's and 1000's of dead in homes, Most could even be from starvation so may not even get reported, And for some reason it looks like the water is Off in some areas!

Prepping shouldn't be about FEAR! it should be from conviction that humans have not cared for the planet as we should have and that it's near breaking point right now. It should be also from the conviction that if it does break no one else is going to look out for you and yours so being as prepared for world breakdown as possible is a sensible place to live in, not a frightened place but a prepared place of cautious optimism that your skills and knowledge rather than your stockpile of things will help you through unpleasantly inevitable times to what is in place after them and hopefully to be a useful and productive member of whatever society is left.12

The household as a collective can - knit, sew, spin (badly), repair & restore things in leather wood & metal (within reason), brew, bake, preserve, pickle, forge (so long as there are several people ready to operate the bellows), grow cereal & root crops (weather cooperating), catch groom & tack (moderately cooperative) horses & ponies, read & write.
Come The Event I foresee these latter two being almost as important as knowing how to bake your own bread, but we have a lot of reference books. Time spent camping can sharpen your appreciation of the important stuff prepping!7 -
A bit of fear certainly helps focus the mind, For the most part in the past ive only ever prepped for being snowed in for a week, or ill for a week or 2, or the possibility of being without power for 3 days. The is a lot of lessons to be learned from what is happening in china, And thinking though all the possibility's in the BREXIT thread was an eye opener.Im only guessing but if some parts are without water in China it may be because everyone is staying at home so no one is running the water plants or available to repair a pipe leak, Water storage is likely very low on everyone's list in the UK Its just always in the tap!Surely its in everyone the FEAR of starving to death, or we would only shop as needed. I remember watching the news as a kid and seeing the african kids near death, That has never really left my mind. Probably why i did a stock take before Y2K.

There's a world of difference between seeing a potential issue, and preparing for it, and acting solely on fear and panic. Having those kinds of videos shared widely and repeatedly, could potentially cause widespread fear and panic. That does not lead to mass prepping. It leads to mass panic buying, exactly what us preppers want to avoid. Prepping is not about panic buying, but rather, being well enough prepared that you can avoid such things.

If you act in fear you can't focus on the immediate reality of a situation and if you prep in fear you'll miss the mundane things that make the difference between a life of deprivation, shortages and desperation and having a breathing space to work out what the reality actually is after any event. Fear makes people draw in and shut down, fear makes for rash decisions and bleak and desolate decisions and always mistakes. I'd much rather have a shed full of garden tools and a box of seeds than a knife or a gun. I'd much rather have some sensible preparations that include boxes of matches and loo roll than be hiding in the woods without either, BUT I have the skills and knowledge to build me a shelter, make it wind and waterproof and warm and forage for food (the important thing here is to know what NOT to pick and eat), and make a fire to be warm beside and boil my water to make it safe to drink should I ever have to hide in the woods in earnest. Fear is not your friend in prepping, caution and common sense yes, yes, yes but fear? definitely not.
For the record there are, if you look online particularly at survival sites or in survival books that are available in most book shops ways of getting drinking water that are not too hard even for the least able prepper. You can even in summer put a plastic bag over a branch in full leaf and tie it tight, leave it over night and in the morning transpiration will give you a little safe water in the bottom of the bag. Do this with a few dozen bags and you'll have a water supply. Also dig a pit, position a water collecting container in the bottom of it, cover it with a plastic sheet, weigh the outside down with stones and then drop a stone in the middle of the sheet over the container and left overnight you will find water condenses on the underside of the plastic and because of the weighing stone over the container, runs down to the lowest point and drips off into the container. It's not high tech but it works.

Euronorris what i do with very tickly coughs is scrap brushing teeth last thing for a night and give her a good drink of honey and lemon or honey and warm squash (plenty of honey in to coat her throat). Do it the last thing she does before she puts her head down and try a double pillow to keep her propped up a bit. Then keep a beaker of it by her bed so she can have a regular sip if she wakes. This is what works best for us. I find cough syrups don't last long enough but you can keep sipping the honey if needed. But it only works well if you do it after brushing teeth - not ideal but its not the end of the world for a day or two.
All you need is a few minutes without a coughing fit so she can drop off. Once you start coughing its hard to stop.10
