  • I'll mention in passing that the neighbours & I agree that the spin-dryer is the most useful beastie of all, even when you have a working washing machine. It spins at 2400 rpm and things are just about touch-dry when you remove them, provided you let them go to the "drip every couple of seconds" stage in the dryer. An hour on the line or five minutes in a tumble-dryer & they're bone dry. I haven't actually "done the maths" but I suspect it takes very much less 'leccy than an hour in the tumble-dryer. When this one dies, I will invest in a *new* one - something that almost never happens!

Offhand does this link work any better ?
For those concerned - I think thriftwizard’s lucky neighbours may be less concerned!

Heard by email from a Aussie pal who shares Himself's passion for militaria. They're going to be trying to celebrate Christmas in temperatures over around 45 C but, says he wryly, "at least we're not trying to outrun the turkey". We traditionally swap Met news as part of the hullo - in their case parts have been over 100 days without rain.

I think I wouldn't be prepping, I'd be digging. Or swimming. I do not function coherently in those temperatures!

Our beach holiday cottage did not have a washing machine, but it did have a spinner! Fabulous! I would hand wash the beach towels at the end of the afternoon, with dds' help (marching over them in the shower basin), then wring them by hand, then put them in the spinner, hang them up, and they would be dry by evening.

  • Google says "Courvoisier V.S. (Very Special) Cognac is a blend of several crus aged between three and seven years (four to eight for Russia), composed principally of Fins Bois with a balancing hand of Petite Champagne." which I suspect translates to not as bad a head as the cheap stuff but still not quite the "Very Superior Old Pale" (which may describe the lucky winner).
Guess what I got for xmas - makes a change from the cooking brandy I normally buy...

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?
  • Our boiler broke down about 4pm on Christmas Day,no heat and no hot water. I phoned SSE because we have breakdown cover. The engineer arrived at 11am this morning reset it and left,it broke down again about 3pm.My sons needed showers because they were working so I rigged up the solar shower in the shower and they had to manage .Luckily we had a oil radiator and a small fan heater, unfortunately it took a while to locate them in the shed .....we need to be more organised and keep them near the front. I was so pleased we had them as the temp here yesterday was -7.
  • Yikes! How are you all now & have the lads figured which gyms & pools are open & have hot showers if not?!

I need to go through the chest freezer, see what we haven't eaten & serve it, so I can reload on the special offer vegetables, and the leftover New Year delights.

Poor you! A wry smile of recognition from me; we've done two Christmasses (one after the other) without a boiler & with about 8 people in the house, some of them working over the festivities. For that very reason, there's a smallish Burco boiler lurking in the rafters in our shed, and a number of little oil-filled plug-in radiators dotted about. But we're lucky enough to live at the warmer end of things, down here, and now have a wood-burner which can be deployed to heat water & food as well as us. Hope the boiler wizards come dashing to your rescue very soon!

We still have no heating or hot water...the circuit board needs replacing. They are coming back tomorrow to fit it.
The solar shower has worked well, and thankfully it’s warmed up a bit outside.
