I must tell the youngest - he's definitely influenced by Lovecraft. We saw a "vinegar mother" in a museum once & he was most intrigued, but for some reason he wasn't allowed to start experiments at the time. No-one's said "oh we'll run out of vinegar" yet but if I step back & murmur "not just yeast", who knows?
Mind you, the inverse is possible - Lancashire falls silent, last communication "the tentac..." & shortly after there is a planetary invasion by something also powered by little grains but not carbon...
(I have a vivid imagination, but then the offspring eat stories almost faster than other comestibles.)0 -
When the chemo started three odd years ago I was looking for alternatives to The Booze - and thought making ginger beer might be good, but had reservations about sourcing the mother especially since The NHS told me I couldn't consume anything unpasturised (which it turns out wasn't strictly true). I've still got a homemade apple cider vinegar from around 2013 - I daren't take it out of the bag...
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -

Reminds me of a Fall b-side
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
At work, we are being reminded to check our vehicles are winter-ready and are offered a 2017 AA link to help.
It's a start, but not a word about winter tyres, or carrying water to drink (clean, top up car etc) at All Times let along a hot drink if you fancy one.
Mindful of that classic joke about the impressive list of winter preps ending in "I looked a right burke on the bus", what else has the AA missed that you'd prefer not travel without in winter?0 -
'Tis the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.....and also free walnuts! I have just walked up to the corner of our road with a Tupperware box and collected a box full of this years walnuts from the roadside verge.....HWK bought a big pocketful home with him this morning too when he went to get his paper! If you know of a walnut tree that is legally accessible NOW is the time to go and forage for them.0

Oh poop our only walnut tree is further away than I can manage to amble at the moment..might have to send OH and DS3 on a mission
We didn't know what we had found when we first spotted it and much sawing with a hacksaw later revealed the contents so luckily not many people know about it!
Still sorting out the garden produce..0 -
Any helpful google photos for those of us who barely identify the tree that dumps rainwater down the collar? (Taller than me, green & wet - I'm not very good at identifying trees.) Or can you spot fallen walnuts & pounce? Or should you ask the household nearest if you may? (I'm not up on the legalities either & would like to abide by both them & the courtesies if possible!)0

Spot fallen walnuts and pounce M'dear but be quick or the pesky squirrels will beat you to it!
Google walnut tree and you'll see the leaf that is most distinctive and walnut trees are hugely tall!0 -
I'm feeling uneasy today, had experience yesterday of machinations behind the scenes to silence voices opposing a political view not held by others. I'm expecting more of the same as we get further into the political turmoil that is our parliament right now and prepping is more important than it ever has been before not just for things from the EU but across the board. If feelings continue to run ever higher then we all will feel the consequences of that and need to be as prepared as we can to stay out of the trouble that others will ferment. Check your preps thoroughly, do it today, fill any gaps because I rather feel that all our tomorrows are going to be turbulent and very difficult.0

I accepted the last flu jab today because the pharmacist was confident she would get more in. It’s not a confidence I share given the havers they routinely make of our prescriptions, so I have a cool arm & some peace of mind but feel a bit guilty.
Is this a known side effect?!0
