:p The best yielding tater plant I ever grew was a volunteer. It grew through a bonfire patch, the tops sprawled 1.5m in all directions and it produced three-quarters of a pail of wunnerful spuds.

Sometimes, I think I should just give up proper cultivation and sit back and harvest whatever grows itself!

Oh wait, I've been doing that with the chard for over a decade now, no sign of them running out any time soon. :rotfl:

  • Aldi have assorted fruit bushes (under 12” tall, 9 cm pot so Some Root) - these are in theory supposed to go into the (well manured for the tayberry & loganberry) ground in spring. Advice sought on how to keep these little sweeties (jam futures!) alive for the next 6 months ?!

Just wondering whether any of you might know what I've got my sticky paws on recently; it's some kind of hoe but I can't find a name for it! Rescued from a skip for 50p (my standard price for allotment equipment, though I did fork out £2 on the push-mower & £10 on the aqua-roll, but then again the shed was free) it has a broken hardwood - probably maple, by the colour - handle but there's just enough left for me to push & pull without knackering my back, because great height is not one of my accomplishments. The blade is stainless & best described as kind of diamond-shaped at the front, with a hole in the middle & an inverse half-moon at the back, and it's wickedly sharp & effective. I've never had to use so little effort; one push & pull & even the nettles, dock & small brambles just keeled over, sliced clean off.

I might even cough up for a new one, if I can only find out what it's called! If not, my woodworker brother will find himself with a new project on his hands shortly, now he's mended the handle of my very best bread-knife...

ETA: DFV, I'd pop them straight into the ground, with a nice mulch of something like well-rotted rabbit/guinea pig bedding. They're hardy & the roots will be burrowing in happily even though the top will look like dead twigs until spring. Might have to mosey on down to our nearest Aldi myself...

And so my reputation for cheerfully eccentric conversations continues...

Out of curiosity (as currently have a cold which is not fair exchange for helpful rabbit/guineapig output) would pelletised chicken guano meet the requirements or might it be a bit too potent?

Aldi had two pallets of plants yesterday: Gojiberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Gooseberry, Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Tayberry or Kiwi Fruit Issai all £1.79 a pot. Got to be worth a looksee as they have a “2 year guarantee” which laughs off the pound shop offerings.

Yay Congrats on the lottie Cheapskate!! diggingfordinner is a really good lottie channel on utube as is steves seaside allotment, allotment diggers I spent many hours flat on my back wistfully watching them all happily digging away!

DFV they sound worth a punt at that price my only concern would be the tayberry if its not thornless find somewhere you want barricaded from burglars to plant it in they are absolutely THE most spiteful plant I have ever grown!
  • Yes, even the brand new innocent leafy bushes left a couple of reminders in me! I must locate somewhere where it's temperament will not upset the household but distress the would-be evildoer.
Still, the sharper the thorns, sometimes the sweeter the fruit. Or at least the more of it, as even the birds hesitate to be impaled. The things I do for jam...

I had to go to my dying father unexpectedly this week so thought I'd update you on my emergency bag situation. In the main not too bad and having cash at home was handy. However, in my rush, I forgot my meds and phone charger. Nothing I could do about the meds, so went one day without. The hospital sold phone chargers so it must be a regular occurrence.

Also could really have done with two days change of clothes rather than one but I coped.

Oof, Jazee, that must have been hard. I hope you're coping okay. Nothing else counts.
