  • Have I mentioned we have a Jacks (budget Tesco, trying to compete with Lidl & Aldi?) Not for much longer - it'll be closing in October, refurbished & re-opened as a small-ish Tesco again In Time For Christmas. How, thoughtful of them. (My wholehearted sympathies to the staff who applied for & didn't get their jobs at the new Jacks & wish them greater joy at the and-back-again Tesco.)

Which means I'll be doing a Spice Run (sorry, Star Wars fan) since they do Ras El Hanout at under 70 pence a jar and other intriguing exotics for less than the big 4 & Much less than Schwartz. Yes, spices have a finite shelf life but I hope to lay in a stash of the tingling tastes at a reasonable price.

I'll also be using the Iceland/Food Warehouse £5 off voucher in today's Manchester evening news (there's a scannable form too, so if you run the right tech, you might manage both paper & digital discounts, albeit on two different baskets). Any advice on what either stock up on that is rare or delicious or absolutely worth every tuppence?! As £20 worth of bacon & fish fingers seems a bit unimaginative.
  • If you use kitchen roll they (food warehouse) had 8x Plenty at £8
Lots of good vegan frozen stuff there too - off to hunt down a digital voucher now...

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Jazee may I add that I'm sorry for your loss. Be kind to yourself.
  • Today I finally found sacks of potatoes on sale at the farm shop and got a 25 kilo sack of Wilja which look to be a good size and suitable for jackets for £9.95p. It's now in the cool storeroom where it is dark and it won't get frosted and I will have the luxury of not having to go outside for potatoes in bad weather. I feel happier to have them in now as they ought to last us quite a while and be our mainstay if we have shortages or can't get out for any reason. Peace of mind stuff!

That's a great price for tatties MrsL we got one at the garden centre from our community 'farm' and it was 7.5KG for £4.50 I think? Wish we could find somewhere that does 25kg locally.

Quick update if anyone is interested in the new autumn cropping Broad beans I have flowers *excited* they have motored along since I sowed them in July think it was? They are available in most seed companies now I got mine from DTBrown :)
  • It is possible I owe the good folk of Dorset an apology. Well, they let their library copy of “the new home larder” be sold by Amazon so I figured they must be All Sorted.

I have taken the home larder philosophy by the throat & used it (along with the imminent closure of Jack’s) as a pretext to load up a bit. (Miword I’ll have skewed their trading figures a tad but they’re busier now the papers are full of them closing anyway.) Assorted sorts of milk (long life, evap, condensed - some of which I am under orders to conceal from Himself as he is partial & others “as it’s Vile”) and a lot of nutritious tins and exciting spices as well as some chocolate & the pizzas the menfolk chose for an evening meal (at under a pound a person this is an Affordable birthday treat!).

Didn’t stop there though - a proper bristled broom (which I’ll use to get the snow leaves & other improper car-roof-landed detritus off) added height to the load & a certain rolling of the eyes to my family.

I now need to sort out boxes to keep spices together & to conceal Christmas plans etc. I wonder if the apprentice will notice if I rearrange the storage under his (used 3 nights a week) bed?

Anyway. I think I may have “gone Dorset” briefly & now have to feed the chaps then play a vigorous round of storage Tetris...
  • Apology accepted! But if you want to "go Dorset" properly, don't forget the ginger beer.

Don't think I ever got that out of the library as I actually have my own copy - somewhere...

  • I got told not ginger beer after an early brew got a bit out of hand & exploded.
The resulting mess was a severe chore to clean up. My ginger cordial works better and I add soda water if I want driver-friendly fizz.
  • Haven't lost a bottle since we went over to proper swing-top bottles, mostly ex-Gr0lsch... previously we did have a few plastic (ex-c0ke) bottles split explosively at the seams and cause a whole lot of stickiness, but as everyone's rather fond of the resulting brew, I'm still allowed to make it! My "plant" is nearly 4 now & contains little grains that definitely aren't just yeast...
