Hello. Just outside St Andrews. We're paying £87 for flogas and that was for a collection as they only deliver once a week and we needed one urgently so went down in a van (14 mile round trip).

    https://www.gmtscotland.co.uk/

Are we getting stiffed? We don't get a receipt that shows the rate of VAT and weren't aware that 20% is only payable on the initial purchase of the bottle and we should be paying 5% on refills. As far as we were aware, the rate of VAT on propane is unregulated in Scotland and suppliers can charge what they want. We haven't been able to find another supplier in the area that is any cheaper or who would deliver to a fairly remote village so if the current supplier told us to get stuffed if we queried the VAT rate I'm not sure what we'd do or who we could report them to or if anyone would even care about enforcement. It's a seller's market right now, isn't it?

You'd report them to HMRC if you thought they were charging you 20% VAT on a refill and they would be in big big trouble. Also, couldn't you get a friend (who doesn't need LPG) to ring up and ask them to ask for a price and ask what the VAT amount is. They could also ask how much it is for additional cylinders (no empty supplied) and ask for the VAT rate on new supplied cylinders.

Ok so we did that and apparently the £87 is with just 5% VAT! So somehow we are paying about £25 more than people in other parts of the country and that’s BEFORE the £25 delivery charge? 😱

    A 47Kg Flogas cylinder is £87.00 (5% vat)+ £3.55 (20% vat)  Surcharge (implemented by Flogas from today) Total £90.55

Delivery to Kingsbarns is £10.00 per delivery on a Friday

Delivery any other day would be £25.00

Vat on the refill is charged at 5%

The vat on the initial cylinder hire is charged at 20%

You need to move to Northern Ireland. Delivery is only £5, however, a 'refill' cylinder is now £124 LOL
  • Been a while but just run out.

£67.35 delivered (South Yorkshire) Back in April paid about £75 but nothing like the £39 paid last year 😅
  • We live in Cambridgeshire and have just received a price increase letter from Calor Gas. The new pricing is effective from 3rd October.

In April we bought 4 47kg cylinders for £230.20 including VAT and delivery. We have just received notification the price will increase on 3rd October to £75.05 per 47kg cylinder including VAT plus delivery which hasn’t been quoted. Therefore, 4 cylinders without delivery is £300.20.

The letter from Calor Gas states the price increase is due to the cost of delivering gas as inflation has increased fuel and staff costs.

I have spoken to Flogas to get a comparative quote and their price is £102.11 per 47kg cylinder including VAT plus delivery.  Therefore 4 cylinders without delivery is £408.44.

Crikey, at last, England is now paying what us poor folk in Northern Ireland have been paying for over 4 years! Hurts, doesn't it...

I have never understood why Northern Ireland has been subject to such disparate pricing Stephen. What is clear though is that both principal suppliers charge what they like when they like.

The “customer service” from Calor is generally appalling too. That’s what a lack of competition and regulations means for us all.

It's also compounded with heating oil prices. In Great Britain, only 4% of homes rely on oil, usually rural. However, in NI, it's around 70% for the simple reason that during the troubles there was absolutely no investment in infrastructure for anything else, hence our reliance on it. The price of oil in the last 4 months has doubled to now being over £1/liter. As an example, I have a 1400 liter tank, which would last about 12 weeks over winter. All help 'talk' is for electric & 'gas'. Luckily, I have extra jumpers...

Thank you for explaining that Stephen. On the basis such a high percentage of homes need LPG or oil it is a shame suppliers are not pricing more competitively. I do know from friends in the village who have oil that they have seen similar increases in price. A recent delivery was 90p per litre and that was using one of the companies who discount if several households take delivery on the same day.

    Here’s hoping for a mild winter…
