Did yopu see Shamu? Is it still the believe show?0 -

No you don't your absolutely right. If i wanted to see a whale i would go to one of these places:

I have very little regard for places that make animals dance and perform tricks for food.
I have been fortunate enough to see Dolphins in the wild performing tricks simply because they wanted to. Ill bet my house it was lot better than watching them in a glorified fish tank dance for food.0 -

i couldnt agree with you more on that one, i lived in the usa for ten years and have been to florida more times than i can remember, but have never been to sea world or taken my daughter,
i cant see the joy out of watching a beautiful wild animal peform tricks, it doesnt appeal to me.
i have heard that the animals have been ill and saved and cant go back to the wild, fair enough, but florida has become all about making as much money as it can.
i guess it all depends on what you call entertainment?0 -
Please help, if I want to visit Sea World for one day with 2 kids 10 and 5) what are the recommendations on where to buy a ticket, eg UK or locally ?
Thanks to anyone who can assist.
I've usually bought Seaworld tickets from their own website, often you can find a code that gives a discount. I'll have a look and see if there is anything at the moment. If you are Services you'll get free admission? plus a one day ticket gives you a second day free which is useful to go back for the evening to catch the night time shows like Shamu Rocks.0 -
LauraUK - It's unusual to see someone else is of the same opinion as we are. It doesn't seem to be a popular one though, people genuinely are gobsmacked we won't go, and say they were in tears at the Believe show. Well, I'd be in tears too, I've gone out on a boat trip in western Canada to see killer whales in the wild and they are incredible creatures , it was wonderful to see even though the boats have to stay a specified distance back from them, it was utterly breathtaking, and yes, they do incredible acrobatics, but it was part of their ordinary life they did it, not for a piece of dead fish.;)
We aren't going to Seaworld, or to Discovery Cove (went to see dolphins in the wild too, nothing could compare with the joy of having them come and visit the boat and ride along on it's bow wave - their choice and again a wondeful experience.
However, I do know that other folks won't have been so lucky to have done what we have, I do accept that these creatures may have been rescued and need to pay for their fish bill somehow, so I don't argue with people about it, just say it's a personal choice and let them get on with it.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

It was Believe when we were in Orlando last year, and we've just come back from San Diego where we saw Believe at Seaworld there so I am sure it is still on in Orlando - it's such a great show I'm sure it's going to run and run.
BTW, we bought a DVD of Believe + The making of.. and Behind the scenes with... when we were at the San Diego park ($) - weren't sure if it would play on our DVD player (thought we would b able to play it in computer if not) but it does play and it's fab.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

No, I agree, me neither
I've been in Seaworld on days that the whales didn't 'perform' and, believe me, they can't 'make' the whales do anything they don't want to do.
They ask the whales to perform certain behaviours, and reward them when they do, but if they don't want to do it they don't do it.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

Well said.
I presume the 'animal welfare folk' think that a 5'5" 9st female whale trainer is able to force a massive killer whale to do tricks??
I would imagine an unhappy/badly treated killer whale would be intelligent enough to kill the trainer when in the water with them if they were being a threat to them??
I do agree though that the best place to see these wonderful creatures is in the wild. But saying that, it's not always a pleasant sight seeing what killer whales get up to in the wild.
I've been to Seaworld 3 or 4 times and have really enjoyed every visit... I can't wait to take my kids there when they're a bit older.0
