Mrs Blink is a bit of a culture vulture - we are going to go to the Dali Museum in Tampa, but she also wants to see a bit of "real america". I was thinking of just driving in to Orlando, finding somewhere to park and going on a bit of a walk. Having never been to Orlando itself, does it have a proper "city centre" and is this worth doing. And can anyone recommend anything?
(We are going to see celebration too, I hadn't realised that it was an "artifical", Disney created, town)
We are staying in Terra Verde in Kissimee.
Cheers
Something else that you can do that is close to visit the Winter Park area of Orlando. It has a lovely area called Park Avenue where you can shop and people watch. It has some lovely non chain stores selling antiques and sorts. There's also a boat ride you can take around the million dollar houses. Well it's not a terrific nightmare but proving difficult none the less.
We were originally booked to go on holiday from 15th-27th January to Orlando, which we then paid to extend to 31st.
Then, we've had a family bereavement, and we're having to push back the holiday (again) so it is now 22nd January-7th February.
We had two bookings at the Metropolitan Express - 15th-27th was booked with Hotelopia, and the last few days was booked with Expedia.
I rang Hotelopia and they have said they can't amend the booking as there is no availability at the Metropolitan Express. Argh. I am yet to ring Expedia to see about changing that.
As it stands then, we've got bookings from 15th - 31st - 15-27 with Hotelopia, 27-31 with Expedia.
Of those, we only need 22-31, and need to find a way to book the Metropolitan for the 31, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and checkout on 7th. Do you think it'll be cheaper just to cancel every booking we have and start over, as it were?
So confused!
Also, we need to move the dates of our flexitickets - is this possible - any help? We have 14 day tickets and we'll need to move them into the new timeslot! Eeep.Comping wins this month: 2 x business class flights anywhere we like | Horse vitamins (!) | New kettle | Motorcycling prints | Signed LPs | Thanks to all!0 -

Hi there
I am really sorry to hear all of this - what poor luck.
I have not heard of Hotelpia but I would have hoped your own travel insurance would come into its own here. I am pretty sure that family issues are one thing you are entitled to cancel for and it may well be that the best thing is just to cancel and find a new booking with someone.
If you really want to stay in this hotel, maybe give the actual hotel a call and explain. One thing I do find with the Yanks is that they are verya cconodating when they can be and it may be they can help.
Not much help but if there is anything else I think off i will let you know,.
Sorry again

Just be careful here because insurance companies specifically ask whether or not you were aware that the family member was ill or had a condition that may result in serious illness or death.
Sorry but thought it an important point to raise because insurance companies generally will use any reason not to pay out.DFW Nerd 267. DEBT FREE 11.06.08

We returned last week from Orlando, just got over the jetlag
.
Anyway here are some of my tips re the area and the parks.
Get a guide book, surprisingly I didn't get on with the Unofficial guide but I'm sure other's will.
Learn about fast passes and best routes round parks.
Useless for us because the parks were rammed over christmas and really spoiled the whole park experience, for us a complete waste of money, very upsetting and not to say scary at times about how many people there were in the parks. I didn't go to disney to wait 5 hours for a ride or look at pretty much all fast passes gone by 10am......not funny, lesson learned, don't go at christmas or don't go to Disney.
Hire a car, there's so much to see other than the theme parks. Best days for us was an impromptu visit to Clearwater......stunning.
Take a laptop. I took my little Asus, had free internet in hotel so was able to check into other hotels online (and get better rates). Also checked weather, credit card payments as a few year ago OH was charged twice for car hire and we never sorted it out.:o
SAT NAV.......OMG mwmph, the best thing I've ever bought.:T
Yes driving is easy, yes the roads are wide, yes the cars are great but taking into account driving on the other side of the road, the 'turn right on red' rule, jet lag and generally being in an unfamiliar environment, our Tom Tom was excellent and paid for itself fourfold.
Get a FairFX card. A preloaded credit card mastercard we used ours everywhere with no probs including to withdraw money from atms. Meant we kept track of what we were spending by checking online, loaded it up when we needed...online and didn't get into any debt or have any nasty credit card bills waiting when we returned.
If I can think of anymore I'll post later.
We used
Car Hire USRENTACAR
Hotel Alpharooms
Flights Travelocity
Park Tix PremierTravel.
I'll try to post links later as 'puter here keeps timing out.

Hi there
thanks for these. Was this the Len Testa Unofficial Guide? I am surprised you did not like it as I think its a very helpful book. DId you try any of the touring plans in it? You may have had better luck with the crowds following one of those plans or the crowd calander.
There is no doubt Christmas is a busy time but with some effort and planning it can be OK.
Overall though I am gla d you had a great time and those liee EEpc are going to take over the wrold. They are gerat.
Cheers
