The law of negligence applies here.
All road users owe a duty of care to one another. If a collision occurs, a court would decide whether you have breached the duty of care by asking what a reasonable driver would have done in the circumstances.
A reasonable driver would slow down and try to avoid a collision. If that means making space, so be it. If making space would put pedestrians in danger then you may not be at fault if you don't make sense.
As long as your actions are an effort to prevent injury to people and property, you're probably okay. You could still be found to have breached your duty of care if your intentions were good but a reasonable driver would not have acted in the same way. Ie you made a bad decision with the best of intentions.
