I regularly use rental cars through work. I have had a number of cars with transmission / clutch issues but the common theme is not that they are rentals it is that they were all Vauxhalls with their 6 speed manual boxes.
One failed clutch hydraulics, two failed reverse gates and one that did not like going into third. Reported to the hire company each time.0 -

I bought a 2 year old 38,000 mile ex-Enterprise Car Rental Mondeo which is now 9 years old with 138k on. 7 years and 100,000 miles in my ownership its not broken down on me and other than a couple of suspension bushes, a track rod end and a short bit of rubber hose from the DPF filter to a sensor hasn't needed anything other than service items.
Disgusting isn't it?
As has been said above, a hire car is serviced on the button, is cleaned thoroughly between hires (so less chance for dirt to get ingrained), and is driven probably more carefully than a privately-owned car. I'd have no problem buying another. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Facepalm. This can’t be serious...0

When I got the V5 I saw the previous owner was ERAC. I was annoyed at the salesman (who said it was a Ford director's car) but not at the fact it was a rental.
They are always pitched as "directors cars", I bought one once, a top spec vectra, ran it for 8 years with no issues that wouldn't have happened with a vectra anyway.
It does make you think that directors have a hard life driving around (in my case 12,000 in 6 months), if I were a "director" I wouldn't drive anywhere except to the Pub and restaurantsI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Not in the OP's case, as after 24 months of ownership he found a rental agreement from a previous punter under one of the rear mats when he got around to vacuum it - seeing as they couldn't clean it very well I wonder what else they let slip, servicing, using incompatible screen wash - cripes, better reject it now.
Good lucks0 -

If i was told it was a ex hire van i would not have got it.
I also just rang the company up to ask for advise on what i have found
But you didn't know and you have bought it. As you have not mentioned otherwise, I assume that you have had two years good service from it and that it continues to serve you well. Frankly, I am struggling to see what your issue is. It is still the same vehicle that you have been happy with for the past two years.0 -
I bought a three year old passat 1.8T, stupidly didn't look at the v5, mortified to see after buying that it belonged previously to hertz! It was in immaculate condition.
It's remained in the family circles and has been completely faultless. It's now 20 years old.Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience? Why? So you can argue with them?0 -
another hire car collected this morning, all scratched up as per.
