My champagne moment yesterday was going to see the film Vice. It is a film based on the life and political career of D*ck Cheney. Christian Bale is fantastic in the role of D*ck Cheney as is Amy Adams as his wife Lynne Cheney. This film is a very enlightening exploration as to how D*ck Cheney became the most powerful man in the World as Vice President to George W. Bush. I really enjoyed this film and there are some laugh out loud moments and some very sad moments as the life of D*ck Cheney unfolds on the big screen. :D I would personally give this film 8.5/10 :D
  • My champagne moment today was that I sold something on eBay! Other than that ... not much.

Went and had some Emmett therapy done on Friday. It hurt - a lot - but now everything is back in its place and my jaw doesn't hurt as much anymore!

Looking forward to getting my mouthguard on Thursday ... 8:30 AM

Ah thank you Madam Mim. That's very kind and thoughtful of you. I'm doing ok. Trying to keep busy and positive. I always console myself with the fact that we had a great life together. We had 34 years, a lot longer than some people get. We had a ball.

The last few years were a bit traumatic with his illness but even then we remained close and spent as much time together as we could. I practically moved into the nursing home with him.....:rotfl: they got two for the price of one.......

I have lots of happy memories and two fantastic sons.....I am content. I sometimes think it would be nice to meet someone else but I'm not sure that lightening strikes twice.;). He's a hard act to follow.

Well my champagne moments this weekend have been simple but pleasant. Yesterday it was miserable here but I dragged myself out and did a weekly shop. Only spent £15, hopefully that will be enough, maybe just a bit of fresh veg later in the week.

It was cold but nice and sunny this morning so I had brunch at the garden centre where my one of my sons works. I treated myself to eggs benedict.:rotfl: I had a chat with their tree expert and shamelessly picked his brains.

I am afraid I cannot really justify paying their prices for trees and shrubs, even with my sons discount .......but I've made a list and I will shop around. An example years ago I planted a £1 sapling eucalyptus tree. It grew into a beauty. The garden centre want £125. now I know there is such a thing as inflation but even so.:rotfl:

He was a lovely guy and really knew his stuff and of course as he knew I was Js mum he gave me lots of tips and advice. Both he and my son know I probably won't buy from their garden centre....it's the most expensive in our city. Worth it sometimes if you want something really special or when they have a sale but otherwise their prices are a bit rich for my budget. I would want to plant my whole garden for £125. :rotfl:

Actually I did see some good offers on plants in the Saturday press, and I usually do quite well with Aldi and some of the DIY sheds for the more common ordinary shrubs. I shall also be taking cuttings from various friends and family.

Butterfly....glad your therapy worked well and that your jaw feels better.

Sheila......belated happy birthday wishes coming your way.

    Hi everyone,
Can I join you all. I have been reading along all the amazing positive posts. A little bit about me. I'm jue :-)
I work part time and have 2 1/2 years before I plan to retire early.
I have a private pension in place which I've paid into since the age of 17.... and can finally see the end in sight.
I have cut my working hours over the last few years to the point that when I retire if I no longer save long term.... I should be financially about the same as I am now!
    Which is great.
I love to stretch my pennies and get great ideas from these forums.
I love the idea of champagne moments on a lemonade budget...
My champagne moments in the last 3 days include some nice walks with the dog... I have membership for the national trust and can access parkland which is great :-)
Seeing my Grandchildren. Seeing my Mum.
A hot meal out of my slow cooker after a busy day at work.

I can work extra shifts at work. ... often if needed. ... and am currently doing this occasionally to pay for 'extras'.... got my eye on a new front door which I could think about for the end of the year if I do this. And I might help buy back some pension years for DH so he can get a full state pension instead of a reduced one.... on adding up the sums this will be financially worthwhile. ... long term. .
Anyway that's enough for now... I can rattle on too much

Hi Jue. Welcome to the thread. Sounds like a good plan to retire early if you can. A few sacrifices now wil be worth it in the end.

My extra frugal January is reaping dividends. I have done my projected February budget and it's looking good. ;). I have to say I am really enjoying this challenge and I feel, really pleased that I have been able to both overpay my mortgage and replenish my savings. Of course repaying the mortgage is a great way to save too, reducing the length of the mortgage and the amount of interest to be paid.

This month my financial task is to look into switching bank accounts and savings accounts. Got to make my pennies work extra Hard.

Nothing much planned today.....it's chucking down with rain - a mini home spa with some beauty treatments at some point. If I can't afford a luxury spa day then I can recreate the spa experience in my nice new luxury bathroom. :rotfl:

    Have a great day.

    Good news.

The cruise company have switched my trip to Iceland to August 2020. BY booking so far in advance I've got a good deal and they have allowed me to transfer my deposit over, so just a £50 admin fee to pay. Fair enough. A great cabin, same as before.

It's a better plan for me in so many ways, longer to save up of course without having to dip into the house fund but mainly it gives me a straight run over the summer to concentrate on the renovations and get the garden established. Plus, it did occur to me that August is the warmest month for visiting Iceland. We're not talking tropical or even Mediterranean heat but June could still be a bit chilly.

Doing it like this also means I might just be able to afford a bit of cheap winter sun next year. ;).

    Win-win all round.
