Damnjet as previously mentioned, what u are getting for the £8 is a tracked service, almost like Special Delivery, although a signature isn't required. RM are just the holding agents for Customs. Whatever courier is used, there is always a handling fee. It's not just RM who charge this.

Tracked service?, the sender payed for signed recorded delivery anyway and for the parcel to be delivered to my address, not just to be diverted to my local sorting office and have £8 pounds worth of handling fee's + Vat added due to a supposed debt to customs of a pound or two.

I do not buy into there breakdown of associated costs either. Its bogus.

Collection of duty should not be royal mail or any other carriers responsibility.

Instead the royal mail are acting no differently to cowboy wheel clampers.

whether you buy into or not doesnt matter
the fact is items have to be removed from the mail stream
    charges calculated
    paid,
then the package is sent through the mail stream separately from normal mail
it is scanned along its journey(recorded delivery means recorded at (shock) delivery, not a tracked service so your point is moot)
then at the delivery office it has to be scanned and logged in
    then the card delivered
after payment,if paid online it has to be delivered
    so there are costs involved
dont like it? lobby your MP to make HMRC create a direct payment facility
  • oh please dont try to justify there charges ex postie, slapping a label on and scanning a bar code costs next to nothing, as for removing from the mail stream?, is my package now travelling alone first class by taxi. i dont think so.

    no point blustering at me
you have no understanding on the way mail is moved
for an item to be segregated, its costs to handle increase

now wipe the foam off your keyboard and settle yourself

exactly,so who are you going to whine at about that?
  • not really because the royal mail obviously find it profitable to work with government agencys just like the post office itself..

    and the other carriers?
seems you want to mump and moan yet have no interest in changing anything
RM are obliged to present mail to HMRC
so whats your solution, since you find the present system so unfair?

customs and excise or royal mail could simply send out a letter or attach it to parcels requesting payment in the same way people get parking fines.

Im curious had i refused to accept the parcel who would then have been responsible for costs of return? and subsequent tracking and scanning...

the same people who return any items for whatever reason
    again your point is moot
so you are happy for RM(in your scenario) to administrate your customs fee and send the package and a letter out
    so no fee on top?
then what if you dont pay that fee/charge?

you see yet again all this would be down to HMRC,then RM would deliver as normal
you cant have it both ways,RM is there for profit
so the buck stops at HMRC

hmrc would obviously create a mailing account with royal mail and invoices would reflect charges of outstanding duty and a small administration fee

Mail could go on unhindered without customers being held to ransom

The facts are management at the royal mail like the current arrangement.

but i will say it again
you will need to approach HMRC about this
whether RM like it or not is irrelevant
this scenario has been in place for many years
the charge was £4 about 4-5 years ago
    now it is £8
it would be down to HMRC to establish this set up,so go for it
