Why are some drivers so impatient?

I drive out early each morning to drop OH off for work. Our street joins a minor commuter route, so when I'm returning, I'm in the midst of traffic heading for the local dual carriageway, and the major commuter routes.

I need to turn right into our street to go home. There's parked traffic on the left, opposite the entrance into our street, room for me to get alongside them, then the opposing lane of traffic. The road bends left at the point where the parked cars are, so I need to slow to walking pace to see if the road is clear ahead, and also to see if there's any traffic coming out of our street, as a high wall to the right makes it a blind corner.

I indicate well in advance, slow down to draw parallel to the parked cars, and typically there's someone behind me who can't get past.

I get flashed with main beams.
I get tooted at.
Sometimes.

This morning, I signalled well in advance, and the main beam went on behind me. I slowed to walking pace, checked the way was clear, and the horn sounded behind. I turned into to my street, and clearly heard from the car behind, even though I had my windows closed, and the radio on ......

"Get out of the f*cking way!!!"

What is WRONG with these people?

    No idea.

I was at a green traffic light the other day and there wasn't enough space for me to drive over the intersection due to traffic. I did the only sensible thing and waited (as I didn't want to block the cars coming from the side when their light turned green).

The lady in the car behind me started honking at me and indicating with her hands that I should go.

When the light turned green again there was than enough space so I started driving. Half way over the intersection the lady behind me passed me and stopped in front of me (in order to teach me a lesson I assume).

That is an extreme case but also the most annoying one I've had. I did laugh at her though (instead of showing my annoyance)
  • Nothing gets these morons more annoyed than just smiling and not retaliating - I just slow right down and laugh.

    1) Perhaps you are slowing down too much and too early for your right turn?

    2) Perhaps you are being unduly hesitant and slow in making your manoeuvre?

    3) You make a point of saying there are parked cars on the left parallel to where you turn so it seems doubtful the issue is that you are positioning too far to the left and preventing vehicles passing on your nearside.

Sounds like you are at fault. If consistanly you upset other drivers that aren't the same driver it would point to the constant (ie. You and your driving) being the problem. Think about what you are doing and if you are impeding others progress.

It's moron culture, you're in 'their' way, how very dare you. They of course never ever, ever impede anyone else's progress do they? Let alone make any mistakes themselves!
Rat race mentality behind the wheel? Even if you win you're still a rat.
Distraction driving? They're not looking ahead so blame you when it's their fault? Who knows...
Probably just impatient a-holes. Car culture......
Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience?

Why? So you can argue with them?

Absolutely hilarious, I've gotta get one of those stickers.
The lost art of overtaking, they come flying up behind you then DON'T overtake when there's loads of room! F...ing idiots.

  • Interesting that a couple of you have suggested that the OP is the one at fault.

I only drive around 8 miles to work and then the same back again. Easy journey on the motorway and a bit of traffic getting to my road. Every single day I witness poor driving, impatience, aggressive drivers, children that obviously have no road sense - either running out without looking or teenagers texting whilst cycling and going all over the place - yet those drivers doing the right, safe thing are the ones who get the abuse.

Busy roads are a way of life these days - what's wrong with being kind, patient and above all safe.

I live in Surrey and the driving is mad, the moronic element who insist on overtaking just so that you can catch them up at the next set of lights/roundabout. What do they think is going to happen?
