How much do you spend on clothes for yourself and your family per year?

  • This year has been a bigger clothing spend than usual.

Some years ago all I could wear were the super-large-5XL-outsize-catalogue-jogging-clothes.

    Then I lost weight.

I have had to re-clothe myself...including buying bras for the first time in decades!

Having lost more weight I have needed to buy a few more bits this year.

Charity shops are not that inspiring clothes-wise here ...although since I have been donating my old clothes, they do a nice line in super-large-5XL-outsize-catalogue-jogging-clothes!!!
  • I "stopped buying clothes" just over a year ago now, and honestly? I've not missed it one bit. I realised, in hindsight, that I was just doing it because I was bored/anxious/thought I "deserved a treat". And it was remarkably easy to break the habit. Mostly, I just stopped going into clothes shops, with the view of, what I don't see, I don't want.

Saying that, I have bought 3 things this year. One was a new winter coat, to replace my previous one, which was pushing 10 years old, and falling apart, which I got in the spring sale at the Superdry outlet store at Bicester. I got it in about March, with a view to wearing it this autumn/winter. I don't remember the exact cost, but I think it was about £45. Then in the summer I got 2 pairs of Primark shorts, which were about a tenner each.

So I've probably spent around £65 since last September on clothes. I might get myself a new Christmas jumper this year, but it'll just be a cheapo one from Primark or the like.
Before my clothing "ban", I was probably spending £50 a month on clothes, so it's been a big reduction.
Because it's fun to have money!

We don't usually spend much, OH has work uniform provided, I have 3 hooks to hang my clothes on so that limits my consumption.
However OH was admitted to hospital on Wednesday, cue much rushing around to buy jammy bottoms for night time wear and lightweight trousers and joggers with tee shirts for daytime wear, I spent about £50.

Last month I spent £15, I bought tee shirts and socks for my grand daughters, just to help DD out.
    Hope hubby is OK.

    Well done. :T
  • This year I've spent about £400 and DH about £500. That includes shoes. No handbags etc.

    Last year probably half that.

I tend to buy clothes/shoes etc to last so for example I have skirts that are 15 years old - getting a bit threadbare now, lol, but can't find anything I like as much to replace them with :o

Ditto coats - I have about 12, although some are more lightweight jackets - the oldest of which I've had over 20 years, the most recent being purchased earlier this year (for dog walking as our worldly goods were in storage in a different part of the UK after we bought this house which was pretty uninhabitable for the first few months!).

We both tend towards a rather 'boho' style which isn't governed by current trends and I buy stuff from a variety of places including All Saints (often second hand online), while DH shops mainly at Top Man for jeans and TK for tops/jackets etc. He occasionally finds decent stuff in charity shops, but I rarely bother to look as most of the women's clothing is awful.

When DS was at home we spent a small fortune on uniform for his (independent) school. The wool blazers were lovely, but silly money. The school did used to hold second hand uniform sales but you had to get there early to find what you were looking for. Iirc, I think I managed to get a blazer there once.

Well yes this has shocked me too because my bank account sorts out what I spend in categories
I find this interesting, which bank account is this?

I find that the only way to really motivate myself is to scrutinise my credit card balance near-daily (I don't use cash). Often the distance of a few hours between spending and it appearing online dissipates any feelings of joy I get from the purchase and by that time I can view my expenditure a bit more objectively!

    LLoyds

It's great I have been using the feature ever since I joined MSE.

Like you say I scrutinize everything especially Food shopping and Going out and it's even better now contactless has arrived as I don't use cash either and know more where my money is going. It really makes you think about where you really want to spend your money and is great for budgeting.

Especially them. Gone contactless - know more where my money is going.
It all creeps up you would be surprised.

I was actually asking a different poster. ;)
I know all about recording where the pennies go so I wouldn't be surprised at all.
