I reckon I have it reasonably easy from that point of view, as I loathe and detest clothes shopping, to the extent that I'd sooner scrub the loo than go into town to look for a new outfit.

I'm not keen on wasting time in the shops either - and although I don't extract much pleasure from cleaning the toilet, I do like it to be spotless. Cleanliness is next to Godliness :A

I’m an absolute label slave and I spend obscene amounts of money on clothes.
Over the course of the year I have lost 3 stone and regained 1.5 going from a size 16 to an 18/20.
I bought a lot of Victoria’s Secret underwear and pyjamas- most of which don’t fit me now so I had to replace them with M&S underwear, I’ve bought Primark pyjamas and Lipsy PJ’s from Avon.
I also started a job which although is smart casual and anything goes necessitated me buying a massive amount of new clothes in summer when it was warm and then again when it started to get colder. Previously not having worked for four years the clothes I had were okay but not what I would call smart casual or really suitable for work. When I got the interview I had to buy a whole new outfit just for interview as I had no smart trousers or tops at all- however when I was on holiday in Ireland I picked up a lovely jumper and trousers in Penney’s for not many Euro which did nicely.
I had clothes but I needed something at the smarter end of smart casual- I bought quite a few t-shirt dresses and leggings from Superdry, also tops and leggings from Superdry, jeans and tops from River Island (that’s the only place I’ve found jeans I really like which fit) I also discovered a website which makes the most amazing dresses which I bought a lot of- I have 12 at around £35 a pop. I did however also buy a lot of stuff from a plus size Facebook group and I got some very nice stuff quite cheaply.
When the weather got colder I bought 2 Superdry jumper dresses- £50 a pop as well as cheaper jumpers from Primark. I’ve just had to buy four new pairs of jeggings and some tops from Yours (totalling about £200) as thanks to my weight gain nothing fits me.
Shoes- I hate buying shoes! I bought some cream Skechers from the York outlet for a bargainous £15, and some Adidas trainers in the Sports Direct outlet when I was on holiday for about £20 which I needed for work as although we could wear trainers they’re strict on what type. For this reason I needed a plainish pair which is one thing I didn’t have. I also had to buy a pair of smart shoes for interview which cost something like 15 Euro.
I’m quite ashamed at how much I spend. I don’t dress my age I admit and I dress like the student I am :D I love fashion and I love being comfortable and looking good. I don’t tend to go for anything classic and my stuff doesn’t last long- the charity shops do so well out of me as I’m always clearing out! I bought a Mulberry Bayswater handbag earlier this year and I know that they cost obscene amounts of money but this was my present to myself for working so hard to pass my degree and Masters. I also bought it at the factory shop so I paid about half RRP for it.
I would love to be able to shop in charity shops and I’m incredibly jealous of all those people who find amazing stuff but I’ve only ever found rubbish! Plus size stuff in particular is difficult to come by I’ve found.

  • Some very useful tips on here. GreyQueen - I googled Project 333 and found it insightful. I’m going to have a bash at it - I love a challenge!

Lessonlearned - good advice. What’s done is done - I’m not going to beat myself up about what I’ve spent in the past. I have a lot of nice/good quality clothes, which I’m going to enjoy - just going to try and be more mindful in future about what I buy. I do have a lot of well made, quality clothes, but also have a tendency to pick up a random top etc. when I’m in the supermarket which usually ends up in the charity shop after a few wears. In the past, I’ve picked up a few lovely things on EBay - the most recent being a pair of black silk/velvet trousers with the tags still on - a bargain! Still going to try and have a break from shopping, don’t know if I’ll be able to last the whole year though! Baby steps, I think.

:) Glad you're finding Project333 interesting. There are several other websites covering similar areas, including The Daily Connoisseur, which may provide value. I have listened to some videos by the author and find her an engaging speaker.

Quick calculation on my part there - and I'm guessing you have clothes that go back to having been bought in your 30's??

Do tell re that - as I am getting a bit p**d off with the "chorus of doom" that is busily telling me I should expect to lose my waist for good now that I've gone past menopause time (even though I've never had children) and I don't believe it.

If you are wearing clothes from your 30's - then I see encouragement here - as it sounds as if you've still got the same figure you've had all along. So if you can = I can.

I'm trying very hard not to think of how much extra I'll need for clothes if I have to replace perfectly decent clothes I still intend to wear again - as well as the ones I've planned on anyway. At the moment I can't wear any of my 3 jackets or any of my trousers or most of my cardigans. I am planning on doing so again - and I think I've gone down about 2 clothes sizes so far...

EDIT; Off to check out which French women in my agegroup are childless and what their figures look like......ie whether French women still have "waists" at our age. There is Ines de La Fressange for one - and she looks rather glamorous and attractive - at 61 years old.

I need to get busy on eBay.
I have at least 3 pairs of vintage (made in UK) lightly worn DM boots to sell.
Plus 3 M&S Speziale party dresses that I bought in their outlet for £10 each then dropped a dress size. Perfect for Xmas.
    I've got busy! :j

Listed my first items yesterday - 2 of the dresses and a pair of chelsea boots.

Have various shoes/DM boots/UGG boots to list later this week.

I have a spreadsheet set up to record P&P and listing fees so I can see any profit and treat myself.
  • Ooh good work! I have done some decluttering but trying really hard not to buy it all back!
