Tis true! Just call your local fire brigade and a small team turn up with step ladders and smoke alarms

I booked a fire safety check on my place, last year. I got a fire engine with three firemen in full uniform, with a ladder:D
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

There would have been at least 4 of them, but one has to stay in the fire engine to listen to the radio (not radio 1 before anyone says it).

As they can be bought for less than a fiver it puzzles me as to why we have the limited and precious resources of the FB going round fitting them for free..

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The fire service don't just provide free smke alarms. The whole aim it to provide people with a home fire safety check. And if people have smoke alarms then they will check their operation, and location (you wouldn't believe how many are fitted in the wrong place). Then if people need a smoke alarm they will provide one for free. However due to the end in funding by the ODPM some fire services are now targeting the people who are most at risk.

Hi, Can I just point out that 'limited and precious resources' are not being wasted by The Fire Brigade visiting folks homes to fit these alarms.

They do tend to the emergencies before they visit folks homes to perform these very vital safety checks.

I had a faulty alarm in my hall, and the 3 lovely firemen who visited to sort it out were almost 3 hours late due to their commitments to saving peoples lives in local fires.

Did it bother me that they were late?

    Not one iota.

They arrived and wanted to keep me safe... :)

Just as they do with other folk. It is what they want to do, and they do very much appreciate coverage of their free service.

    HTH :)

Unfortunately it tends to be the people who are most at risk who don't want anyone coming into their home to carry out home safety checks.

I remember trying to convince a pensioner to have a free smoke alarm the morning after a serious fire over the road from his house. One of occupants only survived because she jumped out of an upstairs window, then caught her foot on the cutter on the bay window, then fell face first onto a wall causing serious injuries. If they'd had a smoke alarm then she would have been woken up in plenty of time to safely walk down the stairs and out of the front door. So anyway this pensioner's attitude was "I've managed for 80 years without one, so I don't need one now".

So it's these people who need educating by friends, families, or neighbours. What better good turn could you do for a neighbour than to save their life by convincing them to have a free home safety check.

Most fire services, if you call them will come round and do a free home check, they will also install smoke alarms free of charge and ensure you have the correct alarm for your house.
A home is not a home ..... without a dog
