  • Many thanks for reminding me of this. I had it done at my old house and it was great. 2 fit firemen, one fire engine outside house to amuse the kids and 2 free smoke alarms fitted for me.
Then a chat about exits from the house and potential fire risks.
All took max 10 mins and gave me peace of mind.
Have filled in the form as we have moved house and def not sure that previous owner had right idea re smoke alarms.

    And its FREE!

There was another thread on this and i commented on there, but im gonna add something here too.

5 years ago myself and my son were woken up to the sound of our smoke alarms. We managed to get out of the house and get the Fire Brigade. We lost everything we had, apart from our pyjamas we were wearing, it wasnt so much the fire that damaged everything, but the smoke. We werent insured back then either, i used to think "it will never happen to me". The main thing is, myself and my son are here.

So, please if you havent got smoke alarms...please get in touch with your local fire brigade...smoke alarms save lives!!!
  • this 'free" smoke alarm seems to be icelanding smoke screen scam...i have phoned them at least 10 times... and... there is a meesage there saying "we'll phone you back"...but they don't ...smoke alarm money syphoned to the space escape, sending school tests to mars, or something like that, i suppose....

  • Thanks for posting this. As a newcomer I don't see all of the posts that have gone before and I am extremely grateful for anything that can make my house safer for me and my kids ESPECIALLY if it's for free!!

Firstly, thanks lorweld for a really, really good post. It doesn't matter whether it's been on before or not if it is ongoing and there will be loads like me who haven't seen it before. This is a really worthwhile post that may make all the difference to someone.

I'm ashamed to say that after my alarm went off and wouldn't stop, it was disconnected and has just been hanging there!

A combination of your post and lannyloo's has really hit home, so thanks!

So sorry you suffered this and glad you came through it - it must have been really, really tough. Like you say people think it won't happen to them or just don't really realise how devasting things can be. Its very hard to imagine losing everything in that way. Thanks for sharing lannyloo and posting a real warning - hopefully people will read and seriously take on board.

The combination of lorwelds and your posts must be one of the most valuable on this board.

  • Sounds a good one - definitely worthwhile. Do you know what criteria you have to meet to get the free alarms fitted?
