Am I the only one thinking that the OP couldn't have been that far from the store before realising this and why they didn't take it back to the store immediately?

To add more to my post....

I have just received a further email from McDonald's asking me to rate their customer service! Again I have held nothing back but will provide you with an email address for them.

    customerservices@mcdonalds.co.uk

Maybe you will do better than I have!

  • I really do think some of the replies leave a lot to be desired. I have my own issues here with my posts about Royal Bank being removed.

Not sure if this post is in the right Forum. Hopefully the Forum Administrators will move if necessary.

    I am a Vegetarian of 43 years since 1975.
The rest of the family are not. But my daughter often buys from McDonalds approx once a fortnight. They now have a Vege de luxe burger which is approved by the Vegetarian Society so I always have that. However the last time we all had McDonalds meals I bit into the Burger and instantly realised it was a meat one. My daughter tells me it was a chicken burger - and it had been put into a Vege Box. I was pretty upset they had done this so I tried to phone the local outlet in Ferndown, Dorset. But there phone was constantly engaged. So I tried to phone McDonalds UK HQ but I just got left hanging on the phone with music. This went on until they closed at 6pm.

I therefore put an email together and sent it to Paul Pomroy, UK CEO plus a copy to McDonalds CEO in USA and a copy to the local outlet plus the Food Standards Agency. [I always find its best to complain as high up the chain of command as you can]
To date I have heard nothing - not even an acknowledgement.
As an aside to this, and bearing in mind the horrific allergy stories we have been hearing lately, I think this has implications with regard to food labelling. In other words its fine to label the ingredients of all food - but what happens if they put the food in the wrong container/wrapping.
Any ideas about what I can do if nobody seems interested. Thanks

    I have some immediate thoughts:

    1. The most obvious thought.... If you are a vegetarian then you should be checking the food EVERY TIME you buy it from a place which primarily sells meat products. Humans can make mistakes from time to time.

    2. You should have gone in store with the burger + packaging and kick off there. Worst case scenario is you'd get a replacement and best case scenario you'd get a goodwill gesture too. I appreciate that you may bring up the "it is too far to travel" point, but hot food cools quite quickly and so it is unlikely that you traveled excessive distances without inspecting/eating the product at the venue.

    3. I don't know what it is like these days, and it may be different with other branches, but when I worked there many years ago there were two themes with the veggie patties..... Either they 1. Were cooked as a batch of 1-2 and left in the tray for hours on end and/or 2. Cooked in the same vat as the fish (depending on your definition of vegetarian it may or may not be an issue). So don't automatically assume that you are being "vegetarian" by having a veggie patty! You might be, but you never know what stuff is going on! They've recently re-branded a lot of the McDonalds so I'd be hopeful that one change was addressing the Fish/Veggie vat issue. (EDIT: Oh and on occasion they were crammed in with the chicken, so as to allow some of the trays to be washed before close; efficient for the kitchen staff but not very "vegetarian" for the customers).

RE: food labeling, what would you like labeled? If you have a sesame allergy then you'll see them on top of the bun (Quarter Pounders, Big Macs etc). You also cannot rule out cross contamination because of the fact that, despite a Double Cheeseburger (for example) not containing sesame seeds, some burgers have been prepped near to sesame seeds. I think they should have a label which says "check your food before consuming". I haven't fully read up about the Pret incident, but I suspect that the girl who died had both reassurances from Pret and no visible evidence that sesame seeds were present? Not 100% sure that it could be applied to a McDonalds because common sense would presumably override the need to label excessively.

Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died due to sesame seeds being an ingredient baked into the bread she ate. They were not on top of the bread like many, nor were they listed on the ingredients of the baguette. There have been instances of allergic reactions like this to pret items in the past so they were aware of the issue. There were no verbal assurances, she simply checked the labelling to ensure her allergens were not on there. I suspect pret are going to be in a lot of trouble due to not acting on previous issues.

Anyway as this is a food preference rather than a food allergy that isn’t largely irrelevant. I used to check my burger to make sure it didn’t have a gherkin before I realised gherkins were delicious. If you have food preferences then you should check they have been adhered to.

With allergies it’s life or death so people tend to be much more stringent with their choices and would be very careful ordering in all restaurants to make sure their allergies were catered to. As someone who has no allergies I can’t imagine how difficult it must be!

Why would a vegetarian even THINK of eating anything from McDonalds?

Why would anyone think a McDonald's is a treat? Punishment maybe.

Mistakes happen. If its any consolation, that chicken would have died anyway.

    Beats me.

    Luckily no children were harmed.
