My dh cycles to work every day - whatever the weather - we got waterproofs from Lidl and a decent bag for him to put his stuff in plus made sure he had lights and a reflective coat (from halfords if I remember rightly). He finds that once he gets going, he warms up and doesn't feel the cold. I would recommend a hat or helmet with some sort of "lip" over the face - to keep the rain out of your eyes(!)

Go for it!! saving £100/month (not including insurance etc) plus getting fit at the same time - ace!

Thanks for the kind thought Angel but frogs don't have fingers you wally!:rotfl:

MrsM you were very rude and I don't like being told what to do you are so right!:rotfl: So now I am not going to bike just because you told me to !

Charlies Mum , I think you are right although I don't want to admit it!

I could always put the bike in the back of the car and leave it at about the 3 mile mark on the edge of the town/village and bike the rest of the way. That would be a compromise and would aliviate the parking prob and car park costs and ease me gently into the biking as it would be only 2 miles!

All comments greatfully recieved except from you MrsM!;)

Give it a go. Really you wont be cold after the first few minutes, you will be toasty.Buy a good set of panniers and you will still be able to call in at the shops after work.
I used to cycle when we lived in london. It was a 6 mile ride or a good hour to 2 hours standing at the bus stop each way so it was an easy decision to make.
I could be home in 20 minutes on a good day.
When I moved jobs,it was a 15 mile ride and I could eat anything I liked as the weight just never went on:p You can sing out loud too and nobody notices LOL (wel if they do,you are gone before they can comment:)
Just give yourself a bit extra time to start with for getting off and walking up the hills till you are used to it and take the car if you are feeling a bit under the weather.

Go for it, it doesn't actually rain hard that often, so yes you'll need waterproofs, but I bet you don't put them on very often.
Just think how fantastic and virtuous you'll feel, and how much chocolate you'll be able to eat.
The gentle start with driving half way then cycling would be a good start, but I bet you'll end up getting fed up putting the bike in the car and decide cycling the whole way is easier.
  • Would you need to shower when you got to work? Dh cycles sometimes but has access to showers at work. On the other hand, we used to cycle all the time when we lived in Cambridge and I don't remember it being too much of a problem.

You're making me feel guilty about not cycling now - it was one of this year's resolutions.

  • I think the two days a week is a good idea. You can use the money you save during these two days to put towards a good set of waterproofs and some panniers, also good gloves and a helmet. And aim to get rid of the car when the MOT is due.

I used to walk half an hour to and from work each day. however I reserved the right (and the £) to get a taxi a couple of times in the month if I really felt grim. Knowing I could meant that I very rarely did. Perhaps you could also have a reserve fund so that if there is an occasional day when it's tipping it down and you can't face it you can go by taxi. Or maybe prevail on your OH to give you a lift to a bus stop :)

I think you know what the right answer is, the good news is that doing something like this is never as bad as the thought of it!

Get your fat green a*s off that car seat and onto the bike!!

Seriously...someone suggested that you do a couple of days a week or even your own suggestion of driving some of the way and then cycling the rest of the way, thereby saving your parking charge and getting some exercise. If you are properly kitted out for the rain etc you won't get too wet or uncomfortable.

The only other thing I can suggest is that you swim some of the way...how fast does a frog swim.......

    Charming!!!:rotfl: It's a good job I love you Gran x

Not too worried abiout the rain as like one of you said it never rains THAT hars and anyway Frogs are waterproof!

The village ends and the town starts at the 3 mile point so I have decieded that I'll park there and get the bike out of the car for the last two miles. At least until Christmas. That should help me get a bit fitter before I tackle the whole 5 miles.

I am stunned that you could do 6 miles in 20 mins culpepper! When I was cycling last year it took me 40 mins to do the 5 miles, well sometimes it took me 35 mins, but I was REALLY puffed. I remember that I really enjoyed the exercise and fresh air and it really lifted my mood. I am quite looking forward to it actually;) I guess I still have the car if necessary.
