I gave up my car last November. It has been fairly easy and made a huge difference to my finances. I got a push bike for my Christmas, but I am too nervous to cycling on the roads. I've yet to make it out of my street! I walk or bus it :)

    Yep me....
This February we gave up our car. We haven't really missed it as we are close to work and school and get our shoppng delivered.
We are saving about £150-£200pm so it's been great. Although we have gone so long scraping by trying to keep the thing on the road that all the spare money is just vanishing on things like clothes, and little odd jobs round the house, things we could never afford before. I hope in the next few months we can start to save the money instead.

We don't regret it one bit

I don't drive and can get most things I need from our little market town....to get to the bigger towns we've a regular bus service and I've got my bus pass.
OH says he needs the car for work although that's only 7 miles away it isn't on a bus route and he's shying away from the idea of a scooter or bike !
I think we only need a car for visiting family and we could hire one for that....still work out cheaper than running one I think.
OH filled up with petrol this morning for our visit to his mum tomorrow and freaked out at the price of petrol:eek:
Maybe he'll change his mind if it carries on like this

I am having to give up my car - not that I used it a great deal, just once-twice a week for the food shop and to ferry the children around..

DH currently cycles to work as his office is so close but in about 6 weeks his office is relocating and he won't have any choice but to use the car. Our fuel costs will increase from approx £60 every 2-3 months to £200 every month (that is at today's prices).

So I am swopping to my bike for good! I have bought a seat for my 3 1/2 year old so he will sit in front of me (it's like an extra bike seat but with a foot rest rather than a big plastic seat and will accomodate him until he is able to ride a bigger bike than his little 10" bike!) and I am buying a trailer to go on the back of my bike so I can transport my shopping and ds1 has his own bike.

Yes, I will still have a car sometimes as we are unable to get rid of it at all now and yes I will need to use the train/bus sometimes but for everyday use... we will be on 2 wheels whatever the weather!

I would love to give up my car, but unfortunately I live 13 miles from work and as I start at 5.30am in the morning there's no busses there, and the town I work in has no train station. My profession makes insurance more expensive, why I don't know as I only use the car to get to and fro from there and not actually for my job.

  • Good on ya Happytails.

I gave up my car two weeks ago. I have a 10 mile round trip for work every day which I thought was going to kill me until I decided to venture onto the canal route (nice and flat :j :j except Delph 9 locks:eek:   ), instead of the roads.

Mind you I don't like this having to get out of bed earlier lark.

Well the 'for sale' is in the window now :D just a waiting game. When we sell it the money is going towards getting OH a scooter for work and paying off some of the overdraft :p

I will be getting a bike and making short journeys on that and getting the bus other times. my OH will also be getting the bus when he doesnt need to use the scooter.

Depending on how i go will depend on whether i will purchase a scooter after summer or sod it off and bike/bus it. IF i did get the scooter it would still save us money.

Had to give up my dog walking as selling the van but wasnt bringing in much anyway, so job hunting now for a local job that i can bike to :T

Will be glad when the van sells but quite scared of the prospect of biking on the busy roads - people are so inconsiderate. Looking forward to keeping trim though, :D
