I have had huge problems in the past with IJ - more worryingly it now appears that they are in charge of chasing DWP and social security debts/overpayments for the government! This is taken from their website today - read on:

Intrum Justitia’s UK subsidiary is one of a number of companies appointed to help reduce outstanding debt for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
The Liverpool based company will work with the DWP to ensure that outstanding Social Security payments and corporate accounts are collected for the department and that Child Support Agency payments are obtained from non-resident parents on behalf of the families who need them.
The appointment to the framework was won through a competitive tender process, where Intrum Justitia proved that they have the expertise and the resources to work successfully on high profile-nationwide projects.
Owen James, UK Managing Director of Intrum Justitia, said: “We are proud that we will have a key role helping the DWP to modernise welfare. This is a significant account for Intrum Justitia which has good potential to develop during 2008 and beyond.
Inclusion in this framework will also give the potential for us to work with other Government Departments in the future. We recognise the part Intrum Justitia has to play in terms of communicating with the DWP’s customers and the reallocation of monies to many needy families across the UK”.

May I suggest then, that lots of LETTERS of complaint to Owen James would be a great idea!

Also, PLEASE do not use telephone and email to deal with any such problem. ALWAYS use a letter, and send it recorded delivery. Having worked in a solicitors office for many years I am always horrified to find that people try to sort these sort of things out by phone: you have no record of phone calls (unless you are able to record them, and then you are required to inform them that you are doing so). Write to them and give them a specific time scale for their reply to you (drafts are already on the forum) and make sure you keep a copy, along with the recorded delivery slip. Whilst you are disputing the debt they have NO legal right to impose any admin charges.

The thing that is tickling me here is that if they send out thousands of these letters, and people only reply in writing not on their premium rate number: then they are going to be waaaaaay out of pocket on this - which appears to serve them right!

  • Not heard anything since I sent the letter and postal order nearly a month ago.
As they say, no news is good news!!
  • Just rang them, am on a mission this morning. Chasing up sky, for their atrocious responses and while I was in a temper I thought I'd call them.
I was told by a very nice and polite young lady that my account was closed after I spoke to the manager, very strange as when I spoke to him I refused to give him my details and told him he would be receiving a letter from me by recorded delivery.

When I queried if they'd had the letter she said it didn't appear so, but the had received the £1 postal order and the account had been sent back.

  • Hi there new to this site so sorry to interrupt. Not quite sure how to start a new thread.

Well basically, i was receiving letters from Intrum Justitia demanding payment of £76.

I sent them a letter with the usual stuff i.e. request CCA 1974 etc.

They sent me a letter saying " we couldn't provide the relevant documents and your account has been passed back to eBay"

I'm only 17 years old and was just wondering whether this could affect my credit rating etc.

    Thanks

Hi All. Just a quick message to hopefully clear a few things up. Intrum Justicia have been appointed by the Liquidators of UGDJ (previously trading as UGD, Britannia, Music & Film, Channel, Soundtrack, DDHE and DD Home Entertainment) under the parent company of Medal Entertainment & Media (MEM).

MEM was put under administration in 2006, and sebsequently UGDJ as liquidated, all the stock held by UGDJ was sold off and the customers accounts were passed to Intrum Justicia for them to sort out the debts owed to the company according to the database records, unfortunately, these records were not very accurate especially those appertaining to Britannia. Once all the 'debts' are sorted out the companies will be completely closed and the remaining funds used to pay the debts of UGDJ etc, these amounted to in the region of £14 million.

Hope the above helps to confirm that Intrum are a legitimate company.

    regards

    Ex employee of UGD

Further to my above posting I've sent off this letter (2nd class stamp as that's all they're getting out of me!).

    12th March, 2008

    Intrum Justitia
    Warwick House
    Birmingham Road
    Stratford-Upon-Avon
    Warwickshire CV37 0BP

Ref: Your letter dated 6th March, 2008 - XXXXXXXXXXX

I wish to inform your debt collection agency that I have no outstanding account with Britannia, Music & Film, Channel etc (or what other name they may have been trading under).

I also wish to inform your debt collection agency, as I did with others who preceded you, that the only dealings I will have in this case is directly with a court of law. If I receive any further correspondence regarding this matter it will be placed in the hands of my solicitor. Furthermore, if you intend to pursue this non-debt I will be counterclaiming against yourselves for duress suffered due to harassment, all legal costs and all personal costs relating to this case.

I therefore expect any further correspondence relating to this matter to be a recognised court summons (by registered post direct from the appointed court of law) as I will relish the opportunity to meet yourselves there. If I do not receive said summons I will assume this matter is resolved.

I've heard nothing back yet! 3 months and counting!
  • I have just found an old letter dated April 2008 saying I owe £44. I called the number on the letter with my reference number and they said I was not on record... does this mean the debt has been scrapped?
  • Just to let everyone know...

they are back on the prowl for Brittannia debtors...

I have had 3 calls this week from them, each time I have specifically asked that they write to me, at my confirmed address, detailing what they believe I owe and when they believe I owed it...

They don't have it in their records that I have asked for this, or that they have called previously... and until they sort themselves out.. I ain't paying for nothing !!!
  • Hi, how do i sort this out? I have also received a letter today from Intrum justitia demanding £30.00 for items I purchased in 2006 and which I paid for.
Intrum justitia where not a bit helpful and told me I had to contact Britannia if i disputed it I tried to locate them but have had no success I dont know what to do next, I am really upset
