I too got the letter for £43.99!!

I have just got off the phone, having explained that i haven't dealings with Britannia or any other of its trading names for around 2 years now and when i did have dealings, it was for one DVD which was paid in full before the account was closed.

The gentleman told me that they've bought accounts dating back to 23rd April 2006 and when asked what exactly the debt was for all he had on his system was 'comp. fee' which he presumed was compensation fee. When asked what a compensation fee was, i recieved a very handy "I have no idea".

Apparently the account is on hold until they get back to Britannia and see what they want to do with the account...

My mum got a letter today too saying she owed £34.71 when in fact they owe her money! We have rung up and they said there's nothing they can do. He has marked it down on their records. Is it wise for us to send off a letter as well like what has previously been mentioned in this thread?
  • Hi.

I closed my account in June 2007, and received one of these letters today, saying I owe £36.66. I hadn't realised that Britannia had gone into administration.

Given how long this has been going on, I think they are on a fishing expedition.

Thanks for posting all the info on the site, & form letters: v helpful!
  • I received a letter this morning saying i owed £43.99.

I have never had an account with this company and told them so - and they promptly cleared the debt - no quibbles or queries they just took my word for it. This to me was a bit suspicious.

Because I wasn't aware of this thread or that other people were receiving the same letter, I immediately phoned back and indicated that I wanted to check that this wasn't a scam. What resulted was an abusive phone call from the person on the other end which was so loud that my husband could hear it in another room! The guy basically told me to phone the Police if I thought it was a scame. I asked to speak to a supervisor to complain but he said that he wouldn't put me through because I wanted to complain about him and that he had to get on with more calls. I spent 15 mins trying to get him to put me through to a supervisor but in the end i just hung up.

Anyway I contacted the Police who gave me details of their head office and other information but advised me not to pay if I thought the information they had was incorrect and ask for further information.

I have now passed the letter on to Trading Standards for them to deal with.
  • Got a letter today for £34.47 Dh called them as in his name girl on end of the phone told him he owed the money to music and film for 2 dvd's she gave him the name of one but could not supply the info of the other, he said well send me this info she said she can't he then said well send me a copy of my signed agreement she said she did not need to as it will be held wih Britannia but that he still had to pay he said no then she said i am terminating this call but DH did before she could. I have got a letter this morning from IJ stating my britannia music account has been passed to them, and they will be administrating my account from now on. Well i nearly fell over laughing because brittania music have not got the authority to pass account to a third party nor have justitia got the authority to do anything with this account. This is because since march 2007
i have had an administration order in place to deal with all my small debts, britannia music are on this list, payments for debts are paid via county court every month and i have not missed a payment yet. so if these idiots want to try and pursue me for the debt they can do, because i will have the last laugh and any court action that takes place will cost intrum justitia money and not me,also i may ask for compansatition for my administration costs. Just read my letter i did not see the part about britannia going into administration, due to this i will inform the county court and my debt advisor of this and see if we can terminate the account on these grounds,as britannia them selves have not previously notified me that payments have not been received.
  • HI
received a letter off intum justitia who are acting as creditors from britannia music and film saying i owe them £10.99 i have not had an account for about 20 years with britannia they couldnt tell me the date this debt occured said it was for a dvd called happy feet im sure my 15 year old son would have enjoyed watching that said they would cancal the debt as being denied as mine
  • I received a letter from Intrum Justitia yesterday dated 7th march 08, only because the postman knows me as I moved address in September 06. I thought I was up to date with my payments to 'Channel' or 'Music and Film' and that I had cancelled my subscription before moving to my new home but Intrum Justitia are after an outstanding balance of £33.47 from 'Britannia Music and Film'.
I'm disabled and have to take pain medication that sometimes makes me confused and I don't know what to do. Are Britannia Music and Film the same company as Channel who later became Music and film?
If I ignore this will intrum Justitia send a recorded delivery for which I have to sign for? Meanwhile the debt could escalate, perhaps take me to court and blacklist my perfect credit rating. If I reply to them I am acknowledging receipt of their letter and they will have my new address.
Can someone please advise me as to what they think I should do?
    Thanking you in anticipation.
  • I see I am not alone!

I too have the letter - I haven't seen it hubby called me about it.

Needless to say I don't believe I owe them anything, and I'll be writing a letter to them this afternoon. (using the template)

I was thinking of paying the £38 because of the thought of it ending up being a silly amount.

Thank you to everyone who has posted their issues on here, without you I would have paid the money.

  • I too have just received a letter claiming £11.69 as an outstanding balance even though I closed my account at least 18 months ago. So I called IJ and they said it was remaining from a collection costing approx £158, I've never received any such collection! At least they will be sending me a statement of account (apparently) so I await to see what it says. Thanks to everyone for contributing to this thread though otherwise I would probably have just gone ahead and paid! Didn't realise they had gone bust...
