Plusnet copyright infringement email

I have done a search and can find nothing more recent than 2010.

I have received an email, apparently from support@plusnet which says

We've received a notification that your Internet connection has been used to share some copyrighted content without the rights holder's permission. This content could be things like films, music or TV shows.

What has my Internet connection been used for?

We've received notification that the following content has been shared using your Internet connection:

Title: FROZEN (2013)
Date: 29/08/2018
Time: 16:36:41
Reference: 21150454

You can check out the details of this - just log in to Member Centre.

I went and checked my account at the member centre and it showed "No current infringements".

I know for a fact that I haven't done what's been mentioned, and I live on my own so no-one else here to use it. I have checked and my wireless connection has the padlock showing.

I don't feel like hanging on the phone for ages with Plusnet and I can't see any other way of contacting them.

Does anyone know anything about this? Should I just ignore it?

  • Just ignore it, I got one myself (admittedly I was guilty as charged). As long as you don't get a second as they have a three strikes and you're out system I think which would be a problem.

Means little on its own. Unless you are using at least wpa2 it can let people in very quickly if they so desired.

Oh dear, sorry but that's way beyond my understanding - little old pensioner here who can turn a computer on but that's about as far as it goes :o
I can find my wifi connections on my tablet (can't find them on my PC, don't know how to do that) and a list of available networks comes up, mine's at the top obviously and says connected. There's a list of others, presumably near neighbours, all with padlocks like mine and it shows one open one, no idea of course who these others belong to.

But if I know I haven't done it and I get another one, that's worrying.
So I take it this is not some scam email then? Perhaps I should hang on the end of the phone waiting to speak to them after all.

Could one of your relatives have done this whilst staying with you? Can you think of any suspects who would like to watch Frozen??

Could have been downloaded to a phone/tablet without you knowing

HAve your guests access to your login details for wifi?

This email refers to 'sharing' which would imply you made it available for others to download.

If you're concerned at all then yes, give them a call. If you're unsure whether any email is a scam at all then don't click on anything within the email. Google the number for the company involved (making sure you are on their website and not a premium redirect service) or better yet take it off any paper work you have and call them direct.

I have spoken to them. The email is genuine. I was told to take a photo of the website message at the member centre that said "No current infringements" so I have that for future reference if needed. They also sent me an email and asked me to copy and paste the contents of the original email so they could get all the details. They will look into it and let me know but the lady I spoke to understood that I live on my own and hadn't done what the email said I had. Hopefully it will get cleared up with no problems.

Did you originally click on a link within the email to visit the member centre?

Did you originally call a telephone number mentioned within the email to speak to plusnet? What was the number?
