What wi-fi security level does it say is set up when you look at it on your tablet? If it's still using the old and obsolete WPS, then it can be hacked in seconds by the average 8 year old.
If so, change it to the highest level the router offers, and I'd also change your wi-fi password as well to lock out anyone else who might have it.
You may not have been downloading copyrighted content, but clearly someone has who has access to your router.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • This may be something a bit too complicated for you, but:
The copyright owners will have used your IP address to identify you. But IP addresses for most residential customers change all the time, every time your router reboots for instance you will get a different IP address. Plusnet are supposed to know who was using a particular IP address at any time, but this can go wrong. Your IP address will almost certainly have been used by somebody else previously. I wonder if they got it wrong and it was that other person.

    Also:
BT routers, and possibly PlusNet which I think also use BT hubs, have a feature to allow WiFi access by others (use to be called BT Fon, but they now call it BT Wifi). I am assuming that BT Fon (or the Plus Net equivalent) would have a different IP address to you, but maybe not. It could have been one of these users (eg somebody with a mobile phone near to you) who could have accessed this via your router.

If you are 100% sure that it wasn't you then surely you should be able to clear your name.

I think I follow you so far, thank you :)

My adult grandaugher, who lives 100 miles away, is a Disney fan and as a teaching assistant does take stuff into school. When she comes for a visit (as she did 2 weeks ago) she logs into my Wifi (as do the other members of the family). I am trying to get in touch to see if she did anything with "Frozen" on the date mentioned.

Yes, my tablet does show "BTWifi-with-Fon - Open"

There are also BTWifi-X and several BTHub5 or 6 encrypted.

I live in a rural area and there is only the BT equipment, other providers rent this off BT. The box is about 10-15 yards from my house. My neighbour one side is with BT, the neighbour the other side was with BT but she moved house a week ago, I haven't seen the new neighbours to know if they have internet connection.

Thank you so much for your reply, I will print it off and have it handy for the next time Plusnet are in touch. Their website is down for maintenance at the moment so I can't see if anything has progressed with my "Question" on my account. I haven't had another email since I sent the information I asked for so I doubt there's been any progress yet.

Did you originally click on a link within the email to visit the member centre?

Did you originally call a telephone number mentioned within the email to speak to plusnet? What was the number?

I did click on the link to the Member Centre that was in the original email. That took me to a screen that said "No current infringements". I mentioned this to the Advisor I spoke to at Plusnet and was told to take a photo of this message, which I did.

I went onto Plusnet website for the telephone number, which was actually the same as the one in the email.

When I spoke to the Advisor she checked and confirmed that they had sent the email so it was genuine, but she couldn't access it to see the content and asked me to copy and paste it in an email to her, which I did, and that they would look into it and get back to me. It appears as a "Question" on my account (which is normal for Plusnet) but the site is down for maintenance at the moment so I can't check for progress, but they do email when the "Question" has further comments and I've not received an email yet.

I've managed to find Plusnet's forum for it's customers, and there are a few posts on there with exactly the same thing, some people admitting they did download/share and others saying they definitely didn't.

Too much for me to get my head around I'm afraid, but if you wanted to take a look these come up with a search

BT Wifi with fon Open means as a BT customer i can stand outside your house and use your wifi legally .

    OK, thank you for that.

When I look at the "Available Networks", my Plusnet Wireless is at the top and says "Connected" and has a padlock (obviously I'm using that).

I've just tapped the BTWifi-with-FON and it changed my connection to that. I've disconnected and gone back to my Plusnet now. Was just seeing what happened.

So any BT customer can connect to my Wifi by using the BTWifi-with-FON? Blimey, what a cheek. There is a holiday cottage directly opposite my house (but it's for 2 adults only), and there are new neighbours next door who may not yet have internet connection. I wonder if that's what's happened?

Flippin' 'eck, this is too much for an old gal, I need a lie down :rotfl:

Sorry, not sure where I look to see the wifi security.

In Settings there is "Secuity & Privacy" but can't see anything about wifi security level there.

Except it isn't the OP's WiFi, just someone else close by. The OP is on Plusnet who don't have such a facility as far as I'm aware. I'm on Plusnet and don't see such available networks.

No, pretty sure that BT connection belongs to someone else close by.
