No, pretty sure that BT connection belongs to someone else close by.

OK thanks. Just had a Google and it says that Wifi with Fon is where all new (from 2009) BT Broadband customers are automatically members of the Fon community and agree to securely share a portion of their wi-fi bandwidth through a separate channel on their hub.

As I'm not a BT broadband customer, although Plusnet does belong to BT, it would appear that I'm probably not sharing my broadband with Joe Bloggs standing by my house through the Wifi with Fon. But that doesn't explain how I, as a non-BT customer, could connect to it when I tried earlier on this morning.

The mind is beginning to boggle a bit!

Anyone can connect to btfon or btwifi. But this does not let you view the internet. There is a secondary layer of passwords and usernames to get through first. If you try at most you will get a page asking you to pay money to BT before you can look at any actual webpages.

I think the whole bt wifi and fon thing is a complete red herring. Ignore it.

If you don't have a desktop or laptop computer then it is most probably someone else who did it. Most likely using torrents as that's how you get caught. Either someone you gave the WiFi key to or just possibly someone who looked through the window and pinched the key code off the back of your router.... But that may be too paranoid a thought.

Thank you, although I don't know what torrents are :o

I have a tablet and a desktop. Not possible to see the desktop as no-one walks past or can see into the room it's in, router's tucked away in the computer cupboard in conservatory so can't be seen.

I've checked with family who live away, they've all had new 4G phones so no longer have my wifi password. Only my son now has the password and I will check with him, he wouldn't want to see Frozen anyway :rotfl:

Well it might yet turn out to be a mistake by someone.

However you might need to check your desktop for torrent software quietly running and sharing stuff just in case some visitor set it up and did not realize they had left it running. I'm not sure quite how to tell you how to do this but you could always check by the clock in the bottom corner to see if little icons look dubious which would be a start. Or just hope it never happens again. But if it keeps happening then there is probably something on you computer up to something....

I would try looking at your plus.net account under the check my usage section.

This should give you a day to day usage guide for the last month and perhaps hint if something is going on.

You can also click on the breakdown usage section and see what it suggests you have been doing. Significant peer to peer or usenet would be a bit worrying. Streaming is ok as its just things like the bbc iplayer.

    Good luck

Thank you, I appreciate your reply :)

There's only me that uses my PC and tablet as I live on my own. All my visitors have smartphones with 4G and only my son has my wifi password and he rarely uses his phone at my house.

There's no new icons or anything dodgy looking there.

I've checked my internet security, nothing untoward has been found.

Plusnet website is having some maintenance so can't check usage at the moment, will check that tomorrow.

Hopefully will get to the bottom of it if Plusnet get back to me tomorrow.

    OP
Can you “ check my usage “ on the member site for the day in question to see if there was an abnormal amount used on that day.
    Edit:
Oh dear, did not realise this had already been suggested, must look harder.

It's pointless worrying about who did it. That ship has sailed. The point now is to lock down your router to the highest level of security offered, and change your wi-fi password.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I've been trying to check my usage since yesterday morning. I just get the message

Sorry, there's nothing to show at the moment.

This might be because your account is new, or your usage has been reset for a new billing period.

It can take up to 4 hours for your usage to show up - please try again later.

    I'll keep trying.

    Follow the information at https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/router-user-guides/
Click on the image of your router and then look for the section "How do I check or change my Wi-Fi settings".
    Then follow the instructions given.
